I am from a town in the shadow of Houston and grew up an Oilers fan and mildly interested in the Cowboys. When the oilers moved off my heart broke so I adopted Dallas full time. When Houston was awarded a new franchise, Tennessee had just changed the name of their team. I and many others assumed they would buy the rights and name the new team the Oilers. Them not doing so was strikes two and three all at once. I have not and will not cheer for the Houston texans. I know that may sound bitter or immature, but I literally grew up on Houston Oiler football and to have it taken away over greed hurt me and wounded my trust at an impressionable age. Taking the Texans side here, Im pretty sure Bud Addams was not going to sell the name rights no matter what.Or he was going to offer them up at some stupid ammount that no man would pay. Addams was bitter and pissed at Houston for not playing his game and did not want to see them get anything that he built. We are now board enemies. Unspoken and uneasy truce between you and I predicated over Texas and Texas A&M is broken. The can be no peace until an oil Derek appears on the side of the Houston Football team's helmet. I would wish you luck but I don't. This will be a hard fought war and many casualties will suffer. Innocent FAN posters will likely suffer collateral damage. This could consume us all! Or it can be cool. I am just bitter over the oilers leaving. They broke my heart in a lot of games before Adams did it for the last time.

Oh I agree, and I would not mind the name coming back, but while he was still alive it was never going to happen. Adams was a giant dick that took his ball and went home. And by that I mean act like a bitch when the city would not cave in every few years, take the team away, but still live in the city that he took the team from. Then again he pulled the same crap as Jerry Jones at the same time in the early 80s by getting rid of the coach that everyone loved.

I am from Pittsburgh and support all the local sports teams. I really don't care who someone chooses to root for as long as they're genuine about it. I just don't like when people consistently change teams. It defeats a lot of the fun of watching sports.

Good thing about Portland is I can pick any NFL MLB and NHL team I want. I'm an Oakland raiders fan since 2002 I have been a Yankees fan as far back as I can remember And same thing for the detriot red wings
But I'm a die hard trailblazers fan and season ticket holder

Because growing up the Patriots were SHIT. Why on earth would I want to support such an awful team? By the time they started to win superbowls, I had already become a huge fan of the Steelers.
Their obnoxious fanbase doesn't help either; I REALLY don't want to be one of them.

There's lots of reasons. I'm from Chicago and never really was a big Bulls fan. (Partially because their fan base are a bunch of obnoxious assholes). I mostly cheer for the Spurs (05 Finals were the first games I ever watched), but I enjoy watching the Heat because it's fun watching a guy climb the ranks of the all time greats. I also cheer for the Raiders as a second team. Why? The hell if I know. I just became a fan somehow. Maybe they'll become a dynasty and I can say I was with them in the dark days.

We don't have any pro teams in Virginia, but around here you're pretty much either a Redskins fan or a Cowboys fan, and none of the other sports matter here. I grew up a Redskins fan because my parents like them, but the thing is, nobody in my family actually watches sports. My parents watch the occasional game, but they don't keep up with any of the sports. So really my enjoyment of teams came from me choosing my own paths once I got into sports, rather than the paths that were laid out for me like is the case for most sports fans. I don't have a problem with people cheering from other teams and not their hometown team, but I hate when a bandwagon team just cheers for whoever is the best at that time. My younger cousin does that. He started getting into the NBA... probably 5 years ago. He was a Lakers fan, then he was a Knicks fan until he realized they're never going to get anywhere, and he's been a diehard Heat fan since they won their first title with LeBron. I'm not one for judging somebody's fandom, but he irks me with that crap.
The one time I find it acceptable to change allegiances or cheer for a new team is when a new franchise starts up. Like I'm a HUGE Red Sox fan, but growing up I didn't have the Nats as an option. Ever since they came around, they've been my back-up team in case the Sox tank hard one season. I'll always root for the Sox over the Nats, but if the Nats won the Series one year, I'd still be pretty happy.
That said, it's still weird to me that I have a friend who lives in Colorado and cheers for THREE different NFL teams, none of which are the Broncos. He hates the Broncos, and his brother loves them.

I suggest you pray for sudden death. I kid, I kid. You're a goddamn trooper and I sincerely commend you. I've been where's you've been many times with my favorite team. The mid-late 90s and mid-00s were dark, dark, DARK times for the LA Kings.

The only way this is acceptable to me is if you were born onto cheering for another team that isn't local. I don't get people who just now find sports interesting and declare allegiance to whatever team happens to be on top. I had a buddy who didn't follow sports until recently and he became a "diehard" Colts fan the year they went to the Superbowl. Then when Manning went to Denver he started rooting for them as his 2nd team. It's sports, and sports aren't, at the end of the day, important. I mean, you can be born/lived in places that have no sports teams. I mean, realistically, Toxik, if you live in Sacremento, you are closer to Oakland than San Francisco. So, logic of proximity says you should like the A's first. Right? I dunno. I grew up in Vallejo and SF, for a little bit, and I am a Giants fan, mostly because I like the NL more.

I stopped caring about the Cowboys around the time he fired Jimmy Johnson. It was one of those times where it became clear to me that they are only the Dallas Cowboys because the NFL wouldn't allow them to be the Jerry Jones Cowboys brought to you by Jerry Jones and Featuring the Jerry Jones Players. There are very few teams and even fewer players that are loyal to a location so why should fans be? I started cheering for Denver after taking a trip through the state and loving it, as well as the new (at the time) unis being nice. As for the rest of Dallas' sports teams I'll follow but I'm not a huge fan of the sport. For colleges, I couldn't even tell you why I love Michigan.

Proximity doesn't matter in that situation as Sacramento gets both the A's and Giants telecasts as well as the Raiders and 49ers. Those our our only local teams in those leagues, now since we do have an NBA team the Warriors would not be a local team to me. In fact I hate seeing all these Dubs jerseys ever since they got good, back in the Kings glory years I never once saw anyone wearing Warriors merch unless they were from the bay area.

Not a fan of sports, but I always cheer for whoever the spurs are playing against.
Just because.

While my being raised in the Greater St. Louis area definitely helped, I think I would have developed a bit of an interest in the Cardinals regardless. Too much great history and too many exciting teams/players over the years.
But prior to the Greatest Show On Turf (and then its hideous decline) I was secretly a Bills guy as a kid just because I started to feel bad for them. Deion and Emmitt Smith were gods at my grade school, so it wasn't something that you just broadcast.

The good thing about being born in London is you have a choice of several teams.

But instead cheer for another team in the same league. All I have to ask is whyyyyyyyyy The closest team to me geographically would be the Flames. So, does that answer things for you?

I was born and raised in Milwaukee. The Brewers of the 90s weren't exactly known for setting the world on fire. When I played Little League, some of my friends' parents and the coaches kept calling me The Big Hurt and I had no clue why. Someone finally showed me Frank Thomas and I really got into the White Sox. What little leaguer WOULDN'T love that comparison? That fandom became easier when the Brewers went to the NL and hardly ever played the White Sox. Brewer admiration is still there (and their A-ball team is 5 minutes from my place, so I catch a lot of those games) but the White Sox are by far my team.
