1.) Hogan 2.) Cena 3.) Austin 4.) Goldberg 5.) The Rock
For me, I think Goldberg could have been huge if he stayed a few more years.
Hell, if Bill Goldberg wanted a Championship match, he could get one.
Goldberg is $$$. People would fork over money to see Goldberg in a match.

I fully expect this thread to be filled with insightful, objective, level-headed discussion of your hypothesis.

At this point in time, you have to at least give thought to the idea that in the main stream way of thinking, Cena may be second to only Hogan now.

I think Cena can be considered the Kayfabe GOAT. 14 time world champion, 4th longest combined reigns and thats with the fact that Hogan/Bruno/Backlund's title reigns were at times where the championships were not defended as much. So since 2005, Cena probably has more successful title defenses than anyone in WWE history

I'm not a huge Cena fan by any means. However, I think Cena's one of the greatest of all time as far as WWE main eventers go, (but not the greatest).

Thread title: John Cena: Greatest of All Time? But you have him at number 2, then the body of your post is about how big Goldberg could have been...

As far as best known I'd say Cena would be third behind Hogan and Rock. Wrestling ability? Well Hogan can't wrestle worth a crap. When I was a little kid I didn't notice and was a total hulkamaniac. When I returned to wrestling as a teenager for the Attitude era I realized he could cut a great promo but was a boring wrestler. Cena on the other hand is credited with quite a few good matches, even with people not known for them like Khali.
Greatest of all time might be pushing it but really in the modern era for Cena to have held the belt as long as he did overall is pretty impressive. I'm sure his hall of fame section will be huge and I think he is the Hogan of the PG era.

Greatest of right now, surely. But there's too many areas wherein he's not even close to being the best ever in an industry as rich with talent as Pro wrestling has been. He isn't best performer ever. But one of them. He's not the best promo ever. But very good. He's not the top cumulative draw ever. But may one day be. And he doesn't have/or hasn't had anywhere close to the cultural impact or familiarity of people like Hogan, Macho, Austin and Rock.
In almost every measurable and quantifiable area that gauges success in wrestling, he has at least one to two people who arguably are superior to him from prior eras. Time will tell, though, if that ever changes.

There is no senseable arguement that puts Cena above Austin , Hogan and Rock.
So it comes down to Cena and goldberg fighting for the 4th and 5th placements.

There is no senseable arguement that puts Cena above Austin , Hogan and Rock. One could argue that he has had a greater longevity as a constant main event player than either Rock or Austin. On the other hand both were the main players at a time when the business as a whole was bigger. IMO you can't really rank them because every one of those "GOATs" had different playing fields. But I doubt you can argue against Cena belonging into this "pantheon".
