I got this question from thinking back on all the different way the WWE booked no. 1 contender for the world title on free TV. I remember like Orton winning it in an over the top battle royal event on Raw so he can headline Summerslam 2004. Then you have promo segments like Cena just choosing D-Bryan as the no.1 contender without him having to win it in a match.
So FAN, what says you?

I'm a tournament mark.

I voted for a tournament format simply because it seems like the best way to prove that particular wrestler deserves a title shot. However, I do have a soft spot for the "calling the champion out" spot simply for how ridiculous it is. Literally anyone can come out and challenge the champ, why doesn't JTG emerge from the shadows to call out Orton. At the very least he gets a match with him.

I have a big time soft spot for #1 contenders' matches; it at least implies that the two guys involved around among the top challengers to the title, no randomness involved (if it's done right), etc.
Hate using battle royals to decide #1 contendership, have to admit.

Tournaments always.
Man a WWE Bound for Glory style tourney to decide the number one contender could be amazing and with the amount of TV they have they could probably pull it off in amount a month and a half too.

Battle Royal because Ryder is to Battle Royals as the Undertaker is to Wrestlemania.
But really, tournaments. They are just fun.

Imagine a G1 Climax style tournament to determine the challenger to pick up the boring latter half of the year.

Imagine a G1 Climax style tournament to determine the challenger to pick up the boring latter half of the year. Really, WWE is lacking in tournaments. A WWE G1 style series could be good, but I'd settle even for an annual 8 man KOTR style tournament. There really should be more mechanisms in place for getting title shots because otherwise we get way too many challenger calls out the champ situations.

This match would probably end quicker than Sheamus/Ryder from that one Raw, but at least he gets the opportunity. For whatever reason, I'm a sucker for Beat the Clock Challenges, so that's what I voted.

I love tournaments. They're a great way of dragging it out over a couple of shows and building suspense.
I loathe the random 'caling out the champ' things. Like two guys who haven't interacted at all and BOOM! suddenly their having a title match.

Tournaments are my favorite, but I think almost any of those can be entertaining if you book it right. The only one I don't like is the whole challenger pinning the champion and getting a shot. Not only is it really inconsistent with who actually can become #1 contender this way, but it's way overdone and comes across as really lazy storytelling.

What, no one's a fan of a main eventer automatically getting a title match upon returning from injury?
