Interesting facts relating to Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, and Shawshank: - Tom Hanks turned down playing Andy Dufresne in Shawshank for Forrest Gump.
- John Travolta turned down Forrest Gump for Pulp Fiction.
- Michael Madsen turned down playing Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction for Wyatt Earp.

I think it's kind of weird when people rag on Forrest Gump but then trumpet Shawshank Redemption. In the end, they're both just variations on the "feel good" movie, with one being slightly edgier. It's apples and apples to me.

I don't know that you can hold the magical saccharine aspects against it though, since it was pretty clearly a fairy tale of sorts. I mean, yeah you're right, it had sappy, magical elements, but that was the story they were telling. I don't hold it against it, well apart from the cheese. I think it is a little emotionally manipulative with it's cheese and sweetness, nothing compared to it's successor I Am Sam (all you need is love? No Dakota, just f***ing no, you need a competent dad to provide for you), it is an movies that is largely carried on Hanks' shoulders, in anyone less... likeable, then it would fail. I don't think Forrest Should have won that year, but I can agree that Tom Hanks earned that damned Oscar. Again, I think it's weakness was the direction of Zemeckis, and possibly the editing. And that is all I have to say to detract it. I love Shawshank, but Gump ends up being a better movie (the ending of Shawshank Redemption is where it fails, if they had been more ambiguous about whether Red was real, and deviated a little further from the original it would have been better). Whereas Pulp Fiction always felt like it was lacking something compared to the other two.

I like Forrest Gump, but best movie that year should've gone to Pulp Fiction

I love that movie and because of it I couldn't watch CSI: NY without thinking that Dan went on to solve crimes I feel the same way about Apollo 13. Lt. Dan tells Forrest the day he's a shrimp boat captain is the day he's an astronaut! As far as I know, the next film they appear in, they're astronauts.

A lot of people can't seem to refer to it anymore without referring to 2 other really good movies that it beat out. Honestly, it was the first of the 3 that I watched and just have to live with the fact that it came out during a VERY good year for movies. I also think I prefer it over Pulp Fiction after seeing Mystery Train. Give props where props are do, Quentin! That said, I love this movie. It's a guilty pleasure. What I love more, is the fact that the author of the book hated it. But you know what I hated? The f***in' book. What a waste of time. The book felt more like a Rain Man character as opposed to someone who is practically the exact opposite onscreen, I think Zemeckis made the right call in making the character not as annoying as it would have been, if it was faithful to the book. Still, Lt. Dan kicks ass. I want to watch a zany sitcom where Forrest and Lt. Dan live together, and crazy antics happen. I always found it interesting when an author of the book that is being adapted hated the movie when the movie is looked back upon as a great piece of Cinema (A Clockwork Orange , The Shinning , Forest Gump).
