I've tried watching a couple and pretty much all they are is somebody blunder around with no f***ing clue about what to do, and groups of guys who loudly talk over all the games dialog and then get confused about what the game is about. So, can somebody explain what their appeal is?

Most of them suck. There are a few good ones where people who know what they are doing and are interesting to listen to (Freelance Astronauts are one of them). Blind ones are terrible in general.

It's usually the person playing it being the appeal over what it is they are playing. Sure games make the videos better but it's purely the personality commentating that is the draw.

With Let's Plays, it's like looking for a good beer. Avoid the gimmicks and the brand names and sift through the small producers, one by one. Everyone's style is a little different. My favorites are just random videos made by fly-by-night posters who either are too interested in the game to bother to say anything or too nervous.

Quadruple this for Newlegacy videos on wrestling games. I don't understand what the hoopla about them is.

They became popular because it's a good way of scouting how good a game is before you buy it.

They became popular because it's a good way of scouting how good a game is before you buy it. Pretty much this. When it comes to professional game reviews, they can only do so much to sell you on a game, and some of them can be biased for some reason or another. Lets Plays, on the other hand, let you actually see the gameplay and allow you to make your own judgments on the game more easily.

I just think it's ludicrous that there exists internet celebrity LPers that bank and get free games sent to them all over the place.
If you sold out hard enough and were witty, you could go pro at Nintendo. That's wild.

Honestly, I've never seen anyone who says they tried watching some and didn't like them ever change their mind.
I've just accepted that it's a "You like it or you don't" kind of thing.

I like those without commentary. I just wanna see gameplay, not some guy's thoughts on life.

I prefer Twitch.tv to Let's Plays. It's basically the same thing, but interactive where specific questions can be asked and answered in real time.
I also see the merit when you don't have a game, but want to see it played. Do not have the ability to ever play the game (If it's on a console you don't own.)
Or, in my case.. I got back into World Of Warcraft about a month ago, my time has run out so I'm hoping to get back onto it shortly. But, with the new expansion coming out soon-ish, and this being the tail end of this expansion's raiding. I doubt I'll be a part of any endgame content before the new expansion comes out, and even if I did... I have a feeling I'd be reaching my comfort zone right around the same time the class changes take effect. So, I'll watch streamers play the endgame raids so I can at least watch them in real time... watch the fights, check out the fails, then celebrate the kills.

I f***ing hate Let's Plays. It sucks when I'm trying to look up gameplay from a game and the only videos available are someone doing a Let's Play so if I want to see any gameplay I have to deal with some obnoxious nerd hollering in my ear because loud = funny, apparently. I like longplay videos, where it is just a competent person playing the game sans commentary.

I feel the same way about a lot of online "celebrities", Nostalgia Critic, that insufferable shithead Spoony & the like, I really don't give a shit enough to watch somebody talk about Nicktoons of the 90s for 40 minutes or so. That may be a generalisation, but it's how I feel

Much rather review games then just play them.
I hope to start that this year.

But that doesn't stop me from having an opinion or being intimidated from posting my thoughts on the series of videos. They're not my cup of tea, dude.

I like Two Best Friends and Evil Tim but I mainly try to avoid LPs unless I've already beaten the game or I'm really struggling at a certain part.
