Math is interesting when you know what you're doing. But I suppose that's with any subject in a school setting. Now to be completley honest, do I like math? Not really. It was one of my most challenging subjects in high school and even in college, as well as passing the South Carolina Exit Examination, in which math is a required portion of that particular standardized test.
I didn't really start getting good grades in math until I enrolled in classes with better teaches and sought out tutoring. One of my favorite things to do is factoring polynomials, trinomials, and binomials. However, still to this very day, I cannot stand word problems or fractions.

I had to take Calculus three times in order to pass it, so yeah, I hate Math, too.
Frankly, all you really need if you're not going to be an engineer or a scientist is the multiplcation tables and doing long division without need of a calculator, which I can.

I absolutely hate Math. Always have and always will. I did great in everything else including Science in school...but Math I was awful at it. Even in college I did good in everything else but Math. I remember taking college Algebra...I lived in the office of learning assistance that semester and still struggled to get by. I always loved the professor's reasoning for needing that crap..."it makes you a critical thinker and a more well rounded student" that was the load they tried to sell everyone on. I have never in any job used Algebra. I've worked in retail, insurance, law firms and other businesses and never used that garbage. I wish I could go back in time and plant my foot in the ass of the person who dreamed that stuff up. I can handle basic Math but anything else...forget about it. You might as well be speaking alien to me.

I obviously understand the need to have a grasp on basic maths, but anything else just seemed like a complete waste of time to me. I was the kind of student that needed to be interested in the subjects I was learning to really care enough to make an effort, so needless to say I didn't do well at maths.
It pretty much came to a head in the last ever maths exam I had when I was 16. One of the last few pages on the paper asked you to "Solve these simultaneous equations", to which I literally answered "Why?".

The biggest problem with math is that it's required to pass in order to get degrees regardless of whether algebra or calculus will have any bearing on anything you do in your career when you finish. I can understand needing to pass something like Spanish or Italian courses because of immigration in this country and companies prefer you being able to sell to any and all customers. But if you're planning on just being an author or a construction worker how is advanced arithmetic supposed to help?
It's just one of many problems with the education system in America.

Believe me its no better in England, don't get me wrong, I understand how basic maths is needed in my line of work (even though I'm in college I'm on acting course) but advanced maths isn't really needed.

Why choose to take it then? Not like it's forced upon you like in High School. In both universities I've gone to, math is a requirement. I majored in journalism, and I had to take math, geography, science, a foreign language, history, fine arts, literature, and tons of other unrelated classes just to get my degree.

Throughout high school and college, math was always there to ruin my life. I had absolutely no problems whatsoever with the other subjects, but anything related to/involving math? It was like my brain just refused to have anything to do with it. Which, don't get me wrong, I can handle basic match. The problem is algebra, calculus, geometry, etc.
I'd say one of the best days of my life thus far was when I finished my final math class I had to take in college. Knowing I'd never have to take another was the best feeling.

But if you're planning on just being an author or a construction worker how is advanced arithmetic supposed to help? Easy. They hope you fail those other classes in hopes that you'd stay there longer and pay them more money to graduate. It ain't like a construction worker or an author is going to go in their vast cash resources to give the school money once that alumni letter rolls around. If you have good enough grades in the courses that matter (ie. your "major" courses) then your GPA should be high enough for you to not flunk out. Higher education needs money too after all. So to help you? Nah, not really. It helps their bottom line. I know it's verging on "conspiracy theory" but I swear so much of that racket is full of shit.

I used to hate math too until I had context to use it. Now I'm fascinated by it. And while I'm here, here's a neat YouTube channel called Numberphile. Enjoy, hopefully.

Now that I'm out of school, I often find that I can do just about any convoluted "real world" problem correctly in my head in a roundabout way since I no longer have to show on paper that I did the problems exactly how we were taught to.

One of the things that help me sleep at night when it comes to math and my future is this thought "Will this person actually care that I got a D in math?"
Maybe in jobs, yes I would have to worry about that, but since I'm going into acting, and I seriously doubt a director is going to reject me because I wasn't an Algebra wiz. The only time my lack of math skills would hinder me in the theater world is that if I was going for a job in Technical theater, building sets and knowing how big to make something. But other than that, math really isn't my main priority, though it does make you feel like crap sometimes when you can't get it right.

My school would issue achievement tests at the start of each year. You'd get scored grades 1 through 13 for each test you took, with 13 meaning you were grading at a college level. I would generally score the grade I was moving into for things like science, English I received grade 13 from grade 8 on or so, but math. Oh Lord. I did the opposite there, I was stuck on grade 8 all through high school, failed algebra, had to be put on an easier course at least once. It was terrible. I get it honest though, my parents were bad in math too.

Why choose to take it then? Not like it's forced upon you like in High School. Anyway, I hated it for the first couple of years of High School, but then we got a different teacher and I embraced it, shot up from the second lowest class to the second highest. Have a bit of rust every now and then for stuff like ratios and times tables, but additions and things in regards to money are a breeze. Then you obviously went to much different high school than I.

Maths was ALWAYS my worst subject. I just had no motivation for learning crap like algebra, pythagarus theorem and long division because I honestly saw no real use for it or need to know it. I learnt pythagarus' theorem back when I was 14. I'm 26 now and haven't had to use it once. Likewise algebra, haven't used it once in my life.
I got an E in Maths. I had to bullshit when I applied to Uni and say I'd gotten my Key Skills in Maths which made up for it. Not sure why they wanted a C in Maths to do a Zoo Biology course but 'eh, I got on and that's all what matters.

I was fine with it (Mainly everyday stuff) but when I had to do the more intricate stuff I got irritated.
Also Richard E Grant hates Maths......Well Maths teachers but I'll put them in the same catagory.
