I feel like the guys who have changed the most like Curt Hawkins and Charlie Haas have been for the most part lower-card guys who changed it up out of some combination of "nobody's going to notice or care" or as a plea for people to notice and care. At least for Hawkins I'm thinking of his terrible luck with tag-team partners and the outfits that went with them, specifically the searingly red leather pants with Vance Archer and the y-front trunks for like the one male stripper-gimmicked match he had with Tyler Reks right before Reks left. And when he randomly started using a cane. The pimp cane really worked with Hawkins, and really did help to set him apart. I always loved his entrance taunt where he pointed the cane down the ramp and cocked it like a gun. Hawkins' black tights with color on the waist and going down one side is his best attire, and it works with both his long hair and current short hair.
