I don't know how many times I said this, but Miz will always be the perfect guy for that role.

I would have went with Ziggler post-AJ turning on him.
The idea that he can't win a world title because of the company he keeps would have been good reason to trade Big E & AJ for HHH & Steph.

With Sheamus you could use continuity to play up the eighteen seconds thing as a reason WHY HHH etc chose him over D Bryan. "He's an an A player Daniel, he finished you in eighteen seconds. That's the kind of face the WWE needs."
Plus, we already know Sheamus is a snappy dresser. Him in suits next to the Authority as the corporate champ, added to everything else, just fits. Better than Orton, better than Ziggler, better than Miz.
Now I'm upset we didn't get it.

I feel like I'm the only one that likes Orton in his current role. Nope, I do too, and I'm not an Orton fan generally. Same, I ff every Orton match, but he makes the most sense. None of that "up snd comer needs to be going over" stuff makes sense here.If heel cena wont happen the next best thing is Orton.

on topic with OP: I think by the time Summerslam rolled around, Ryback was a bit too damaged charactor wise to be effective in that role.
off topic: Miz in 2011 would have been a perfect fit in the role as Authority figurehead. Miz in 2013 was so far away from the main event that Santino would have made more sense.

It would've at least been more interesting and helped elevate a new star, but Ryback should've been a main event babyface anyway. One could argue Ryback should've been playing the Bryan role all along.

by Summerslam Ryback had 0 credibility left. at least with Orton you believed he could beat Bryan. Ryback is barely above Curtis Axel on the totem pole and nobody would buy him suddenly being able to beat Bryan (even with shenanigans).

I don't like him in that role but I'll admit it's the one that made the most sense on paper on multiple levels. Here's a guy that has been a complete asshole to the McMahon family on multiple occasions, to the point that his mere existence should make them sick. Instead they reward him and push him as their champion and face of the company. It really solidified Hunter and Stephanie as being complete scum bags now in a way I don't think any other talent could have done. In real life Orton IS the guy they'd prefer on top over Cena , so he fits in that sense. But what has always bothered me is that his character had been long established as some psychotic "snake man" and they seemingly had to water that down just to get him to fit in his current role. Like Orton would be a better fit if the Viper/Apex Predator never happened. and they also suddenly started acting like Orton was an incompetent boob who the crowd never liked and could never get the job done on his own. it's just weird booking for Orton. they might as well have had Cena or somebody say "hit a million RKOs, never drew a dime" given the way they dogpiled on the "total failure only a moron would put the belt on" metatext.

Again, this is assuming that they don't turn Ryback heel after Mania. Meaning he beats Henry and all that

Orton was the best guy for the role for several reasons.
He's as established as Cena, but doesn't have the huge personality Cena does. He's more believable as a corporate stooge.
Bryan had a lengthy rivalry over the summer, with Bryan coming out on top. That showed that Bryan COULD win in a fair fight.
Plus the whole "everything handed to you" thing only really works with a guy like Orton. A guy who has 2 wellness policy violations (and supposedly had other ones wiped off his record), has been a pet project of guys on the top since his debut, and has the Orton family pedigree.

I love how being the son of Cowboy Bob and the nephew of Barry O is somehow a great wrestling pedigree now hehe.

What would've tipped it over the edge for me is if they just went all out with the whole "face of WWE" thing. I'm talking Rock Bottom '98/McMahon-Helmsley era RAW style OTT; huge banners of Orton's smirking face hanging from the RAW set, a giant Viper motif in place of the WWE logo, the full works. Just be as obnoxious as they possibly could be. It's all well and good having Triple H come out every week and say "Randy Orton is the face of the WWE" 37 times over, but it's hard to buy into the fact that they really believe this when it's still Cena's likeness plastered everywhere.
