Unfortunately I do not know of any place that buys broken laptops. They can be tricky with those warranties at some places. They have regular warranties for a lesser price and then they have ones that cover everything for somewhat more. My mom almost fell for that where she got a Kindle Fire HDX at for Christmas...luckily for her she asked for the full coverage warranty.
I'd try Gamestop. I think they buy broken things...even pc's and tablets. I'm not 100% sure though. Best Buy maybe? I'd try there too.

Paying back the money spent on the gift, just because you accidentally broke it, is just madness.

The glass itself is broken, the lid and hinges are fine. The actual computer still works, if you just use the mouse and ignore the fact that it will randomly open programs for you. I've been trying to find a replacement screen, but I haven't been able to locate one for my model yet. The computer repair places around me are a bit sketchy and I don't really trust myself to do it, so that might be a problem. Still, its probably my cheapest option at this point. And unfortunately, the ship has probably sailed on returning it to the store and claiming it was broken when I got it. I'm too honest for my own good, unfortunately. Does It have an HDMI port or VGA on the side (it probably will have, most laptops do nowadays)? If so why not just buy a monitor and hook it up to that, you won't be able to move it around but at least you'll have a usable computer. As for it opening random programs that's probably due to the touchscreen, you should be able to disable touchscreen functionality somewhere in the windows settings, if not uninstall the drivers for the touch screen.

I work in IT fixing computers. Most laptop screens are pretty easy to replace. Please PM me the model of the laptop and I can see what I can find for you. Some of them are no more work than removing 4 screws.
