American Dad and Family Guy, at least to me.
Most of the cast of Red Dwarf would be pretty unbearable to deal with past 24 hours, but they're still fun to watch.

Veep. Every single character. I keep meaning to watch that one. In that same vein almost every character on Everyone loves Raymond were unlikable. That goes double for Seinfeld.

Supernatural has done that quite well,Sam has gotten so unlikeable I actually am happy when he gets his ass kicked Really don't get the hate for Sam. Ya he certainly has his faults but he's also given-up a ton for a life of hunting he really didn't want. He did whoop Satan's ass and was going to sacrifice himself to close the gate to hell til Dean stopped him.

I second Red Dwarf.
If I knew any of the characters in real life, I'd dislike them... with the exception of Kryten who is just awesome. But they're such a clash of personalities and it's such a well written show that it somehow works.

That's true. He's not exactly unlikeable, just a guy I wouldnt' want to have as a flatmate. Outside of the slobbishness, he's a good lad really. I think if I knew him in real life, his slobbishness would get on my nerves though

Though not a fry cook (and he never left his restaurants a mess), he fits the "amazing chef with a short fuse" to a tee. Cook or customer, he don't care sometimes... He owns the place, and there's no licensure process involved in being a chef, so he can act like that. But I think you also have to take into account that much of what he says or does is just a persona for a show where casting calls go out for patrons. He doesn't act that way on the British shows that he's on, it plays better for the Americas. And even then, he's rarely rude to customers, even on Hell's Kitchen. I can only remember a handful of times he snapped at a customer, usually when they went to the kitchen to complain. it's also worth noting that on Kitchen Nightmares one of his biggest peeves is owners/head chefs treating the staff badly. I'm going to guess he acts a bit differently when he's at work than when he's doing Hell's Kitchen.

Are we talking shows where the character is supposed to be unlikeable (Breaking Bad) or where the character is supposed to be a nice guy, but annoys viewers (Scrubs)?
In both cases, NCIS. Gibbs is supposed to be a passionate, no-nonsense leader, but he comes off as a jerk. Tony, however, is supposed to be a jerk.

I think it's also a given that it's much easier to pull this kind of thing off in a comedy than it is in a drama or action series. I mean look at how many great comedies there are with a protagonist whose a total dillhole. there's Married with Children, Seinfeld, Community, Arrested Development...

Came in to post this. Everyone in Sunny is a total douche and it just heightens the comedy. Yet I still occasionally somehow want them to succeed. I don't know how they do it.

Would Hitler count as the "hero" in Downfall? Of course, the images of the parodies help there...
Patsy and Edina on Ab Fab if they weren't such caricatures of what they were spoofing. And with Saffy becoming a massive c*** in season four and up...

Also on Masterchef he's much calmer as well and they usually try to portray him as the more neutral judge.

Few shows even really try. I mean, House was cited but we were clearly still supposed to like House and root for him. Breaking Bad's a great example because so few people wanted Walt to get out alive. They wanted him to get what was coming to him for all the bad choices he made.

Young and the Restless definitely. I can't think of a bigger douche than Victor Newman and he's been that shows leading man for over 30 years. Women still fight for this clown which is puzzling. Also, he should have gone to jail eons ago for all the crimes he's committed. Not to mention all the moral transgressions.
