It's aged beautifully, especially compared to the film which beat it for Best Picture, Dances with Wolves.

I think Dances With Wolves is still a fine movie as well.
Want to talk about "dated"? Crotching Tiger Hidden Dragon is the epitome of a movie that seems less now than what it was then.

I personally love it, but I can see why it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea.

I agree that Dances with Wolves is a pretty good movie, but over the years it has really sunk in how much more deserving Goodfellas was for the Best Picture that year. Goodfellas continued to be talked about as a great film, one of the best of the 1990s and one of the best crime/gangster films ever. Dances with Wolves continued to be thought of positively, but not in the same way that Goodfellas has been.

If Dances with Wolves did anything, it made Native Americans proud to be recognized as people by our country. It's no coincidence that the highest amount of Native Americans registered to vote after the movie came out.
Having Goodfellas lose to 'Wolves still isn't as bad as Raging Bull losing to Ordinary People.

I dunno.
All movies age. It's inescapable. Times change. Sensibilities change. Even filming techniques change. What do you want?
It's not like Goodfellas is racing to be dated like "Aw, Home Alone, Michael Bolton, The Dominoes Noid, The Dallas Cowboys."

I thought Donald Sutherland gave a great performance in it, but Raging Bull is one of the greatest films ever made. It winning over Raging Bull does seem like a bigger wrong than Dances with Wolves winning.

Yeah, it's also why I never made a fuss over Forrest Gump beating Pulp Fiction, simply because I thought both movies were VERY good. I don't get upset when a good movie beats a movie I liked a little more.
Now Crash winning in 2005? Chicago in 2002? Out of Africa in 1985? Around the World in 80 Days in 1956? Now those...THOSE are bullshit winners. None of those deserved to win.

To me, the 1960s and 1980s in general had some really weak winners. Outside of Casablanca, the 1940s seem like they got it wrong most often than not, though I think the attitude during the World War II era led to winners like Mrs. Miniver and Going My Way.

I actually liked Driving Miss Daisy. But I agree on the other 2...the 50's and 60's were full of terrible winners. Gigi? Are you kidding me?
It's not even a criticism against musicals since My Fair Lady and West Side Story were really good, but more about the movies not having a single memorable thing to them. I'd probably disagree with at least 50% of the winners in one way or another.
The worst winner in my honest opinion is Cavalcade. What a dull pile on crap.

We sure do seem to have seen a lot of Best Picture winners. Just for the record, the only ones I haven't seen are The Life of Emile Zola and The Great Ziegfeld. Yes, Cavalcade was pretty dull. Pretty forgettable. Of course we have to take into account the time period. The filmmakers were making films for the audiences of the day. In these cases, they delivered the goods. Some films hold up really well (It Happened One Night, Mutiny on the Bounty) and some don't (The Broadway Melody, Cimarron).

Here's the thing about Ziegfeld...take the stage show out of the middle of the movie (they literally have a 1 hour stage show in the middle of the movie) and it's a fine movie. It's not amazing, but it's pretty good and there weren't any other movies nominated that were better. Emile Zola is also good, but forgettable and should have lost to Dead End or to a lesser extent Captains Courageous.
Yeah, a lot of older movies don't have that aging factor to them. If you watch an early soundie, you better hope it's a WB gangster, or that either Preston Sturges or Frank Capra's name is attached.

Yeah, it's also why I never made a fuss over Forrest Gump beating Pulp Fiction, simply because I thought both movies were VERY good. I don't get upset when a good movie beats a movie I liked a little more. You see that is one I do actually have a problem with. Dances with Wolves winning over Goodfellas doesn't really bother me because they're both great films (although I do prefer Goodfellas a little bit) but I never really liked Forrest Gump. I thought it was pretty dull and I just didn't enjoy it. I don't hate it but if I never saw it again it wouldn't bother me. On the other hand, Pulp Fiction is my all-time favourite movie. Hence why it not winning in '94 really bugged me. If Shawshank had won instead I'd be less pissed because that's a damn fine movie. But the fact that Forrest Gump beat Pulp Fiction and Shawshank to the award will always annoy me.
