My thoughts on the end of the 500: "Holy shit!" Kept saying that over and over on the way to the car. Great day at the Speedway. Those last green laps were INTENSE. Damn near lost my voice at the finish. Some notes: 2nd closest finish in 500 history, at 0.0600 seconds. Closest is Unser Jr. over Goodyear in 1992 at 0.0403 seconds. 2nd fastest 500 at 186.563 mph. Fastest was 2013 at 187.433 mph. Hunter-Reay is the first American winner since Sam Hornish in 2006. It is the first time that the 500 finished under green since 2009. Two of the races in that stretch ended under a yellow that came out on the last lap (2011, 2012). This was my 19th 500 and it was easily one of the best, maybe even the best that I've seen. Hunter-Reay vs. Castroneves was amazing. The fact that you've been to not one but 19 Indy 500s makes me insanely jealous. On the other hand, I guess I have the somewhat street course equivalent in the Grand Prix of Long Beach.

Did anybody else see the Detroit GP today? Pretty good race overall. I'm really happy about the top 2 though.

Did anybody else see the Detroit GP today? Pretty good race overall. I'm really happy about the top 2 though. Watched it after work. It was a fun race which can be surprising to see at Detroit. Will Power is my favorite driver, so I'm always glad to see him win a race. Could be another duel between him and RHR for the championship. It was a lot of fun to watch in 2012. Not a Graham Rahal fan by any means but I know a lot of people do like him. About time that National Guard money started getting results. That was a great fight at the end between him and Power. Getting a little sick of Hinch recently. He seems to be making a lot of over-optimistic moves that end poorly for someone else. Nice to see the rookies running well. His results aren't the best so he probably won't get it at the end of the year, but my RotY so far is Hawksworth. He's been strong all season except the 500 and would probably be a race winner already with a bigger team. I've liked what I've seen from Aleshin as well. Muñoz is a bit erratic and Huertas is pretty much the opposite but both have had some good finishes this year. I wish Karam was doing more races. Cheever was wrong about Aleshin being the first Russian to lead an IndyCar lap today, as Aleshin led a lap at the Indianapolis 500. Looking forward to the race tomorrow.

In fact, now that I think about it, his rookie season so far is reminding me a bit of Greg Moore's rookie season in CART back in '96. Much like Moore that season, Hawksworth has looked really good to dominating at times, but something always happens at the worst time for him. Anyways, I'm not necessarily a Graham Rahal fan either, but I was rooting for him because he and his team need showings like today's a lot more often than not.

I was surprised when they showed that Rahal was the only full-time driver who had not finished in the top-ten yet this year, before today. Not so much because he hadn't finished in the top-ten, but because everyone else had. And throwing in the part-time drivers - Busch, Conway, Hildebrand, Karam and Servia all got to top-ten before Rahal did. It was shaping up to be one of the worst seasons a driver could have. He moved up quite a few spots in the championship with his 2nd place today. Probably won't crack the top-five but he is within striking distance of the top-ten.

1 thing I miss about old NASCAR- the cars looked cooler. 2001 alone had these cars that caught your eye: Nowadays, they look too alike.

That and the engineering is so, for lack of a better term, retarded to the point that is is basically just an IROC race with decals. I mean, I understand the need for safety, but there has to be a happy medium to let the engineers do their work.

I'll admit that the current car bodies are eons better than what they were running from say 2005 to 2012, but still. The thing with sponsors is a problem that Indycar is having too in the sense of having less mainstream sponsorships without a strong and distinct brand identity paying a lot of the bills. That and the inconsistency from having sponsors buy only half of the races per year for example.
There's times I wish they would go like F1 and Le Mans and have team sponsorships and a uniform paint job for the team, but the Nascar traditionalists would have my head for that. Though for Indycar at least there was always something impressive about having the matching Marlboro cars or Kool cars or Players cars... noticing a trend there.

Not so much needs to come back but it's amazing to see how big of an influence it was in hindsight. Winston Cup goes without saying but I think in 1997 CART you had Marlboro, Players, Kool, and Hollywood, and I'm probably forgetting one of the other. Tobacco and beer.

I loved when Ganassi/Sabates would run 2 Target cars in Cup with matching schemes, or opposite schemes. I can only think of a handful of times its been done (Earnhardt and Neil Bonnett one year for Talladega in '93, and the 28/88 Texaco/Havoline cars with Ernie Irvan and Dale Jarrett for a few races in 1995). I'm sure there's more, but its a really cool idea.

Ed Carpenter wins at Texas. Will Power had a drive through for speeding on pit road, managed to stay on the lead lap, took tires on a late caution and powered to second. Juan Montoya finished third.
I liked the race. More fun than last year's Texas race. I wouldn't want every race to play out like this, with 6 cars on the lead lap, but I also don't want every race to end up like the 500 and there are 20+ on the lead lap at the end.
Really like to see Carpenter win too. This team of him and Conway will be dangerous if they keep building on the successes they've had this year.
