RanSuggested by ThereIsNoAbsurdistOnlyZuulHm, I'm not sure if I'm really the right person to discuss a movie like that as it seems to be an acquired taste. Alright, the story is that in feudal-era Japan, a lord abdicates in favour of his eldest son. However, jealousy and hunger for power quickly gets the best of his other sons and their feud soon turns bloody, starting an all-out war for power. The I'm saying I'm not the right person to judge this movie is that I can't find anything objectively wrong with it. It's well acted, well directed, the costumes and locations are gorgeous, the action scenes are good, but I was just not very interested in it and I think this is because I am not particularly fond of this kind of movies. Not that I dislike them but hey have to be especially good to really grab my attention. I did have one genuine problem with it though as I feel some scenes drag on for much longer than they need to. I find it interesting that I mentioned The Good, the Bad and the Ugly just before this one as I feel that while Leone makes very long movies, he manages to make every second meaningful. This one, on the other hand, had many parts that made me go "okay, I get it, let's move on". This movie is 2 hours and 40 minutes long and really doesn't need to be. In fact, I feel it would have gained a lot from being shorter, not to mention for such a long film, I found the characters to not be as well developed as they could be. So yeah, it's a well made movie and I'm sure if you're into this kind of stuff you will have a great time. Everyone else... well, you won't regret seeing it and you'll probably enjoy how good it looks but I don't think you'll miss anything if you give it a pass either. Next time, we'll take a look at our fourth Asian film in a row and we'll be keeping it classy with Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead.

Alright, fine! I'll give it a proper review. Here we go again. *Sigh* ... I'm putting more effort into this movie than its makers did, am I not?Zonbi Asu (Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead)Suggested by Push R Truth... ... it stinks. Get it? Because it's a film about toilet humour! HA HA HA!... don't give me that look, that was genuinely funnier than anything you'll find in this thing. I honestly considered leaving the above "joke" review as is because... well, it's called "Zombie Ass". Do you really need my help to decide whether you'll see it or not? Really the plot is as basic as it gets as far zombie films go. A tapeworm-like parasite eats people's brains and turns them into zombies, then spreads by coming out of their assholes and infecting other people. There, that's about it. Oh and there's also a scientist using it to cure his daughter of leukemia, so he needs more zombies to farm the parasites. How is a brain tapeworm supposed to cure leukemia? F*** you, that's how, because even the scientist doesn't bother with an explanation during his expository dialogue. Well, the film delivers pretty much exactly what it promises. It's a zombie movie with poop jokes. I mean... what the Hell am I supposed to say? If that sounds like your cup of tea... yay? Oh wait, it does have not one but two tentacle rape scenes too. Because when I think horror-comedy, I obviously think rape. At least when Evil Dead did it they made it appropriately horrific (and frankly even then it wasn't necessary and there's a reason they didn't use that in the remake part of the sequel). I'm not even trying to say rape jokes can't be funny, anything can be funny when done right. The problem is that when it's not funny, you're just the guy who put a rape scene in your scat zombie film. And then there's a few scenes where the movie seriously tries to pull our heart strings with drama, like when we have flashback to the heroine's sister committing suicide after being bullied. Comedy! And no, it doesn't add a thing to the film and is extremely out of place in a story about ass zombies as it is played entirely straight. As a zombie film, it's done to death (and not just because it's a zombie film, I actually don't mind those being trendy) and as a comedy, it's not funny. Man, I miss seeing stuff like Pan's Labyrinth or My Name is Nobody. Next time, we will move on from Asian movies but will stay with Zombie flicks with Cockneys vs Zombies. |

I'll give it a shot. Persepolis (2007) Oooh, interesting pick. So let's make this a bit further down this rabbit hole. Waltz With Bashir (2008). Fair assessment. This is Akira Kurosawa's last big epic, the same guy who directly influenced Sergio Leone (or outright stole in the case of Yojimbo being remade to a Fistful of Dollars). And in this case it is pretty much King Lear transposed into medieval Japan. |

XD Well, Serbian Film, for as unpleasant and pointless as it is, I can talk about, I can analyse it, if only to point out how it is everything wrong with pretentious pseudo-edgy pseudo-artsy films and art in general. Zombie Ass... what am I supposed to say? Everything's in the title. It's got zombies, it's got asses so I guess it's a success on all fronts (and behinds), two thumbs up, can't wait for the Criterion release. To be fair, asked between re-watching one of the two with my back to a wall and a gun to my head, I'd probably wrestle the gun out of my attacker's hands and shoot him dead for attempting to put me through either of those again, or die trying. |

Cockneys vs ZombiesSuggested by The PixelAlright, I know this is gonna be a huge shock but... I liked this one better than Zombie Ass. As the title implies, it's a zombie film... IIIIN ENGLAAAAAAND!! The gist of it is that two brothers, Terry and Andy (wait, could that be a reference to King of Fighters of all things?) living on minimum wage delivering meals to their local retirement where their war veteran granddad happens to live and is quite cross with them for not having "a proper job". They hear that the home is going to be closed down and its residents scattered across other homes. To avoid that, they come up with the brilliant plan of robbing a bank to save the home with the help of their cousin Katy because she can pick locks (everybody with me now: she's the master of unlocking! Ha ha ha, that's good stuff) and two other guys, Davey and Mickey. Unfortunately, due to a mixture of incompetence and them hiring a psychopath for the job, it all goes to shit and they end up in a shoot-out with the police and taking hostages. Fortunately(?) for them, not too far from there, on a construction site, two workers uncover an old crypt with an inscription stating it was sealed under order of King Charles II. They break it open and end up releasing zombies, starting an apocalypse which allows our heroes to escape the bank, although it's like jumping out of the frying pan into the fire. I must say I am pleasantly surprised with this. Considering it's a low-budget zombie semi-comedy rated less than 6 out of 10 on IMDb, I was expecting either a boring and predictable cliché storm or an obnoxious and predictable cliché storm but it was neither of these things. Okay it doesn't exactly break new grounds but it was a fun watch and I didn't have many moments that made me go "welp, we've seen that a thousand times before". No, it was a rather fun watch, and it feels like the kind of films you'd want to watch with friends for a good laugh. It was well acted and had very good special effects and action sequences, and I very much appreciate the fact that it managed to have fun with many usual tropes without making it feel forced, something few horror and especially zombie film actually pull off. I also appreciate the fact that they refer to the zombies as such rather than coming up with a weird term like "necrotics", "infected", "specimen", "Bio-Organic Weapons", "Undead-American" or whatever they make sense of these days as if it somehow made it more original than your average zombie AND that the characters are not oblivious to what a zombie is and act accordingly. There are a few predictable moments and the characters of Davey and Mickey feel rather pointless but in the end, it's still a very enjoyable film. SO yeah, grab a fw friends, grab a few beers, pop in the movie and you'll have a fun evening. Well, after that I'm feeling better. I'm ready to take on any movie because nothing can possibly ruin my moo- The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Loverwell, motherf***er.

The thing you gotta understand is that the fecal matter is a metaphor for struggles faced in contemporary Japan. The zombies represent the repressed desires- I'm just joking. The movie is terrible. The ending battle was kind of cool but you need to watch the entire movie in order to get it(which would be too much of a hassle). Overall, I question the decision of the person who suggested this. |

Ha ha, you'd be surprised at how many people genuinely make such claims about gross out films that are clearly made for the sake of being gross (oh, to read about how Cannibal Holocaust is oh-so totally satirizing "the glamorization of violence". After all, what better way to do so than with unsimulated animal snuff?). Still, I won't fault Push Val Venis. The reason this thread exists is to indiscriminately watch what people want me to watch and it would be boring if I liked every movie I watch. Besides, it's not like the film downright pissed me off. |

In the end, I was basically telling myself "you may not be the best in the genre but you know what, Cockneys vs Zombies? You're aaaaaaalright!". |
