Celestia wasn't exactly given much choice in the matter; she couldn't properly use the Elements of Harmony, and Nightmare Moon - by Word of God, even - wasn't going to end the eclipse after one day. Better to banish her in the hopes that a solution can be found than do something rash like kill her. It's like with Spock in Wrath of Khan; the needs of the many (the citizens of Equestria) outweighed the needs of the few (in this case, Celestia and Luna). They were sisters and best friends, and are effectively immortal beings; Celestia condemned herself to a millennium of loneliness in order to not only save her people, but to find a way to save her sister. |
