Because it was 1997? I went back and watched some 1997 last year and keeping track of who was meant to be Face and Heel was ridiculous. That's part of why it was so awesome. It wasn't WCW-esque people turning every week for random swerves, the characters were just that nuanced. Some heels hated other heels, some faces hated other faces, some heels were okay guys, some faces were kind of dicks. That's great, in my book.

If Bret lost he'd never wrestle in the states again. HBK caused Bret to win. I read this in a way to assume that the fans were pissed that Michaels was responsible for Bret sticking around. Don't worry guys, he'll rectify that mistake a few months later.

Reminds me a lot of Michael Hayes and I guess the Freebirds heel turn in Dallas in christmas 1982 in which Hayes was the guest referee in a world title match. And wasn't a heel ref just circumstances happened that caused him and the fans to be enemies, just like Bret was largely responsible for what happened at Summerslam 97, similar blame goes to Flair.
