Pretty simple. When a team/movie/game etc is most succesful a certain amount of people will always rally against that. Although I am guessing it works both way and people who have no association with the city of NY root for them cause of their history.

They are the dominant franchise in the 4 major sports, they're synonymous with excellence in baseball. They've got 27 World Championships. They also have the most money, and they spend it, that's the big thing. They're referred to as the Evil Empire because of that. They play the villains of Major League Baseball. Although this year, the Dodgers spent more money.
But I just say this, and I'm biased cause I do like the Yankees (dad's from New York so I always heard about the Yankees, despite him being a Dodgers fan). Yeah they've got the most money, and they spend it, but they spend it on the team. They bring in more money for baseball than anyone else. There's also the fact the Yankees have embraced being the villains of Major League Baseball. They've had shirts like "27 Time Dynasty", and "Got Rings?", the Yankees flat out embrace being the Evil Empire. They don't try to hide who they are.

Because f*** New York.
The amount of national coverage New York teams get even when they suck is ridiculous. Not the Yanks, but here's an example, the whole Jeremy Lin "Linsanity" crap never would have happened if he was putting up the same performances and numbers in Milwaukee or Sacramento. It was just a product of the bullshit hype machine that is NY sports.

Some fans, though I am indifferent on this, also feel Yankees fans can have entitlement problems. Meaning, they basically think it is a given that the Yankees should always be the biggest of deals and given the most attention.

There's no hard luck success story to be had with the Yankees. They buy the best team possible each and every season. There's no magic. It's a corporate snowjob.

There's the stereotypical New York ego of "We're better than you", the team for many years WAS just plain better than everyone else (having a HoFer at every position helps), their owner was a huge egomaniac and had I believe two "lifetime bans" from baseball due to some pesky criminal charges, and they are constantly in the media spotlight even when they sucked bad in the 80's.

The above reasons....plus I live in Philadelphia, we just naturally hate mostly anything new york. Plus they beat the phillies in the 2009 world series...damn them.

Because even when they have a bad year, they get more TV time and steal the spotlight from other teams that worked their way to a good year.
Also called the Triple H effect.

Its the fact that not only are they great, but they have the money from winning to buy players.
As the Yankees win, they gain more fans, more publicity, larger sponsor's and a but load more money.
So lets say that the Angels are the worst team. One year they draft 3 new players, who develop into real talents. The Angels fans start to get excited as their team is no longer an easy beat. The fans and club even start to dream about a world series title.
Then along comes the Yankees. They flash a load of cash at the 3 players and away they go. The Angels go right back to being easy beats. Of course the fans are going to hate the Yankees.
That's just a generic example but it is true that if not for buying players, NY would have won a lot less than 27 WS titles.

I don't remember where I saw the line written, but: "Rooting for the Yankees is like rooting for the house in black jack"
It isn't so true these days, but moreso back when they won 3 straight titles and appeared in a fourth straight WS (where they were beaten by Arizona)

Every Yankee Fan I know personally (all three of them) talks about the rest of the league as if they were nothing but a farm system for the Yankees to cherrypick as they try to buy another championship.
Which is why it's so much fun to watch the Yankees lose to teams with half their payroll.

People despise them because of pine tar, arrogance and A-Roid. The only thing that they've got going for them is the fact that Jeter is their classiest player. It's a shame that he's retiring at the end of the season. I never ragged on Jeter as hard as I ragged on A-Roid.

People don't like arrogance. That's why there's currently a circle within Cardinals fandom to stop using the term "Cardinal Way" because it sounds pretentious.
I'm indifferent to the Yankees (my sports hate is reserved for the Red Sox, Reds and Cubs), but I get why they receive the backlash they do.

I actually like the term "Cardinal Way" because that's how they've gone about their business since the 1930s. Lose a player? No problem, we got two or three guys just like him in the minors that can take his place.
Although Rickey was shrewd with selling his minor-league talent. You, as a GM (or a scout), go in looking for an interim shortstop. He'd sway you away from paying $5,000 for a shortstop you actually want, to sell you a third baseman you do NOT NEED, and end up paying too much for in the process. That is a slick salesman right there.

I don't mind it myself, it's just that fans of other teams think it comes off badly because their minds don't connect the term to work ethic and instead hear it as "we're morally superior", which isn't the case.

It was just a product of the bullshit hype machine that is NY sports. Hype machine? It's New York. It's only the biggest media market in the United States. It just so happens that ESPN headquarters is within striking distance of New York (Albeit it's employee base seems to be overrun with Boston sports fans, but that's neither here nor there.) . Hence, with the big city atmosphere, comes the money and the hype, and everything else that comes with it, negative and positive. Folks tend hate the Yankees because a lot of the fanbase are spoiled (As touched on previously.), their overwhelming success of their past, and the fact that their big-spending philosophy is in direct opposition with the mentality of a lot of teams, chiefly the blue-collar, small-market underdogs like the Boston Red Sox. Finally, nothing ever interesting happens in NorCal that's worthy of news anyway, save for drunken linebackers calling in bomb threats or the nothing-happening team moving shop to the Pacific Northwest. ;D

And A-Roid isn't clever, it's been beaten to death in a really unfunny way. I actually like A-Rod, but I'm not big on the Yankees because of the mini-rivalry the Tigers have with them.
