Blue Jays acquired 1B Brett Wallace from the Orioles for cash considerations; assigned him to Triple-A Buffalo. Ahhh..I remember when Brett Wallace was a can't miss prospect, former #1 draft pick, for the Cards and how some people got all pissy that he was traded for the Cardinals to get Matt Holliday. Frankly I assumed he was out of baseball, I mean once you get released by the Astros, you're kinda at the end of the road.

They're calling for rain to persist on and off through the evening. I'm thinking there's not gonna be a Derby tonight.

Giancarlo Stanton might hit one out of Target Field tonight

Either it's because it's the rain, the format, or Target Field is a cavern of a stadium or some combination of the three, but this Home Run Derby sucks so far. Bautista and Stanton are pretty much the only ones who've done anything interesting.

Bautista and Stanton are pretty much the only ones who've done anything interesting. I'd say the rain and the format. The air is moist and heavy (insert sexual reference here) so that's keeping ball travel down. Also with the old format, a lot of guys didn't get into a steady groove until outs 6, 7, or 8. Early outs are being wasted on foul balls and line drives. Hopefully things will pick up.

Yeah it looks like Cespedes has found his groove at least.
Amusingly, Todd Frazier just sorta lucked his way into the final. Go Jersey Kid!

Wait a sec, the Derby winner wins the WWE title? And does that mean that he has to defend it on Sunday?

Wait a sec, the Derby winner wins the WWE title? Nope, Cespedes is a wrestling fan and carries around a replica WWE Title, seen plenty of athletes have those as let's be honest, it is sort of fun to have a championship belt for anyone who isn't a wrestler.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Red Sox were prepared to up their extension offer to Jon Lester to "$100 million for five years, or thereabouts" before Lester halted negotiations.

Yeah, David Ortiz has one, LeBron and his Heat teammates each got one, I think Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews both have one, the Detroit Pistons got Big Gold Belts to honor winning the NBA Title in 2004, and the Mavericks had their own Spinner when they won the NBA Championship.

The Nike ad with Jeter is pretty damn good, even if it might be a tiny bit of overkill.

The Nike ad with Jeter is pretty damn good, even if it might be a tiny bit of overkill. I don't think it's any overkill. If anything, it should have been more than 2 Red Sox fans tipping their caps. The guy's been the face of baseball for roughly 15 years (McGwire and Sosa were the last guys you could say were the face of the game), and is the most respected player, so it's not overkill at all. I loved the appearance of Torre, Mo, Tino, Posada, and Pettitte. Just in case there are some who haven't seen it

He's been a symbol of excellence and class. As a rival, he was always the guy that made me say "I hate Jeter.....but goddamn is he good". I just got a very weird wake/funeral vibe from the AD. It was really classy, and he deserves the tributes he'll get. Just struck me as a little much, that's all

Read a good article in the NY Times today about All Star Game viewership going down every year. 20 years ago they'd draw something like 23 million viewers, they can't even hit 11 million today. I'm sure part of it is that there are more options for viewing today, but, as a fan, this just feels like another argument for killing interleague play.
Granted, a big reason the ASG isn't as big anymore is also how we all have access to clips and full games of any star we want to see at any time, unlike in the old days; that genie is out of the bottle and not going back in. Yet if ASG and World Series ratings are going to continue to dip, you'd think MLB would have some impetus to come up with solutions to stem the tide of the problem.
For the record, the Pro Bowl now outdraws the All Star Game by nearly a million viewers. The freaking Pro Bowl.
