I like the trade for the Cubs. Baseball America had Russell and McKinney as Oakland's top two prospects. And Straily is a guy who has struggled, but has a lot of potential, just the kind of pitcher Chris Bosio has excelled with. And with Kris Bryant and Russell, the Cubs may have the top two position prospects in baseball. Add Iavier Baez and that's three of the top five.
I know playing the prospect projection game can be dangerous. But damn, the lineup come 3016, could be ridiculous.

Both McKinney and Russell have shitty swings. They are going to be quality MLB starters, but they're nothing I'm really, really bummed about losing as an A's fan.
However, we've got the #1 offense in baseball today, and our rotation now is stacked. I'm juiced. World Series or bust.
People will say stupid shit about us, and we'll have all eyes on us. "They better win rings now." or whatever. We're built to do it, and I'm excited.

Hopefully the Cubs contend in a couple of years. The A's had better win it all this year with the two great pitchers they've got now.

It's a very un-Billy Beane-like trade. I actually like it for both teams. The A's are going with a "World Series or Bust" attitude, and now have a fantastic starting rotation. They have a good farm system even without Russell, McKinney, and Straily so I think they can shoulder their loss. Plus, great prospects aren't always guaranteed great major leaguers while Hammel and Samardzija are proven winners (I was hoping one of them would be available to trade to the Yankees to help out their battered rotation). The Cubs meanwhile are rebuilding for the long term and could actually be competitive in a couple of years. I like the job Theo Epstein's doing there.

As a Dodgers fan, watching Kershaw is just great. I was 11 when Bulldog did his thing and remember sitting in awe watching sports highlights. Let's put this in perspective. Drysdale was 26 when he set the record, Hershiser was 30 when he put the new mark up. Kershaw is Drysdale, by the end of 1962 was 104-73, which was through seven seasons. Hershiser was 83-49 5 years into his career. Kershaw is nearly identical to Hershiser at 87-48 in h is seventh season. Oh, and he has a pitcher's Triple Crown to show for it as well. Pretty much, baseball is a video game to him right now.

MLB would be a sad place if the Cubs won it all. Nobody else epically sucks on a cosmic scale like the Chicago Cubs. Plus if the Cubs won it all it would be the end of Wrigley Field. Most of the reason Wrigley Field works so well is nobody gives a shit about the Cubs losing. It's a fun place to yell, drink beer and get a suntan. If people went to the game to actually watch it, they would notice the seats suck, the view sucks unless you like a sore neck and pissing in troughs isn't as fun when you are sober.
