The Commonwealth Games has its opening ceremony tonight at Celtic Park in Glasgow, Scotland, with action getting underway tomorrow (July 24th), running until August 3rd, with the closing ceremony taking place at Hampden Park, where the athletics takes place. If you're not aware, the Commonwealth Games has an interesting mix of countries taking part, who are either members of the Commonwealth, or affiliate territories. These include the hosts Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland (who all compete separately, not together like they would at the Olympics), plus the likes of Australia, Canada, South Africa, India, Jamaica, Pakistan, New Zealand, and several other Caribbean, African and Oceanic countries. It's the third largest multi-sport event in the world, after the Olympics and the Asian Games, and is known as the "Friendly Games" due to its relaxed atmosphere. I'm not expecting for this thread to get as much play as an Olympics thread would, since the Americans aren't involved, but hopefully the Brits, Canadians and Aussies on here will be interested... www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-28419129

Considering that Australia usually dominate these (we haven't been topped in the medal tallies since the last time these were in Scotland in 1986), its a bit surprising that there is little to no buzz.

I love having my city being disrupted for a run and jump competition.
Now I know how it feels to live in London.

I didn't really appreciate what it was like for someone outside of London to try and come in during the Olympics until I tried to book a weekend trip to Glasgow (I wanted to go this past weekend for some wrestling shows) - train tickets and hotel prices were absurd. I was isolated from this during London 2012 mainly because I live in London, and Oyster prices (the electronic travel card Londoners use to get about at cheaper rates) remained constant.

This will be a good event. I always enjoy the Commonwealth Games. They should have had a football tournament in this for U21's though. Would be valuable experience for younger players, especially from the Home Nations.

I live less than a mile away from Celtic Park, my work is on the other side of the Athlete's village (Nothing better than walking past a fleet of armed guards at 6am, nothing better)... there's a reason I've taken the next two weeks off and staying in for that time (apart from ICW of course).

Not really paying attention, but I heard a cover of The Proclaimers' '500 miles' , looked up to see a couple snogging in the middle of the stadium.

Funfact: Keeley Hawes was the voice of Lara Croft in the early Tomb Raider games.
