With the way the horns have been playing it's not surprising they needed a culture-change, good on Strong for righting the ship. Needed Culture change? What you mean having your players eat orange slices and Capri Sun on the sideline during is loss is needed for a culture change? It was his mom's turn to be in charge of the team snack, he just wanted her to know they weren't going to waste. Hope he shared with the BYU qb with the massive kneebrace, dude worked-up a thirst.

The NCAA has granted the "Power 5" conferences autonomy on a number of issues (staff sizes, contact between players and agents, financial stipends, etc)

Emmert's own words were used as reasoning as to why the NCAA lost
Thus, the Court finds that the NCAA’s restrictions on student-athlete compensation are not the driving force behind consumer demand for FBS football and Division I basketball-related products.
followed by:
Dr. Emmert himself noted that much of the popularity of the NCAA’s annual men’s basketball tournament stems from the fact that schools from all over the country participate “so the fan base has an opportunity to cheer for someone from their region of the country.”
The academic consensus on this issue is not surprising given that many of the NCAA’s other rules and practices suggest that the association is unconcerned with achieving competitive balance.
followed by:
In fact, Dr. Emmert specifically conceded that it is “not the mission of the association to . . . try and take away the advantages of a university that’s made a significant commitment to facilities and tradition and all of the things that go along with building a program."
and:
It is not clear that any of the potential problems identified by the NCAA’s witnesses would be unique to student-athletes. In fact, when the Court asked Dr. Emmert whether other wealthy students -- such as those who come from rich families or start successful businesses during school -- raise all of the same problems for campus relations, he replied that they did.
The testimony of Dr. Emmert and various other athletics administrators that most Division I athletic programs operate at a loss and would not remain in Division I if the challenged rules were removed conflicts with the clear weight of the evidence.
Trusts incoming?
several of the NCAA’s key witnesses -- including Dr. Emmert, Mr. Pilson, and Dr. Rubinfeld -- were specifically given an opportunity to respond to the idea. None of these witnesses provided a persuasive explanation as to why the NCAA could not implement a trust payment system like the one Plaintiffs propose. The Court therefore concludes that a narrowly tailored trust payment system -- which would allow schools to offer their FBS football and Division I basketball recruits a limited and equal share of the licensing revenue generated from the use of their names, images, and likenesses -- constitutes a less restrictive means of achieving the NCAA’s stated procompetitive goals.

I will not feel a single shred of sympathy for the NCAA. For the last three yrs it has had opportunity after opportunity to see the problems and fix them. They took loss after loss and were embarrassed almost daily because of their practices. They reluctantly conceded some things here and there but ways as a reaction. My case in point could be yesterday's autonomy announcement followed by a court ruling today that would have forced the act. Honestly, I believe the NCAA is fortunate to exist at all now. The power five could have moved on last yr or the yr before and the NCAA would have been powerless to stop it. Any injunction would have tied both sides up so indefinitely and with it, held up the kick backs the NCAA depends on from member conferences and schools. The ability to focus on the mid major and lower tiered schools will be helpful to the NCAA going forward. Whomever is appointed the head of the power five"0's new governing body will yield more power than the entirety of the NCAA. The money alone will make the head of that body a czar. It has a been a tumultuous five yrs. The expansion, BCS controversy, the playoff debate, lawsuits over likeness rights and TBI, Penn state, Miami, Oklahoma state and UNC cases with their non-uniform punishments and now the final blow, they were essentially strong armed into allowing autonomy. They should nd could have allowed it yrs ago but they just kept ducking their he'd in the sand(or in the pile of money they collect). So no, I will not have any sympathy for the NCAA. I hope the power five enact the most outrageous rules possible. I hope players are tcu ally protected instead of exploited. Most of all I hope this is the end of the continued bickering. It has detracted too much from the sports and student athletes they were mandated to protect

Projected starter at FS Leroy Alexander is out now too. He can stay in school and practice with the team but can't play for a year. Nobody is coming-out with anything official but rumor-mill thinks he pissed hot. Edit: Now LB Michael Rose is injured. I can't believe this this crap. Moss, Jackson, Alexander, and now Rose all gone and the season hasn't even started. This was supposed to be a good defense, now we're paper-thin. MF this sucks.

I think it's great that now they'll be able to do more in terms of insuring athletes, making sure they're fed year-round, and providing for them to better educate and prepare themselves for life after football. At the same time the ruling will obviously create a rich-get-richer scenario, increasing competitive imbalance. What I'm interested to see is how the many college sports that don't make money will be affected, do they start getting eliminated?

Just some more info on the 5 grand. From what I now understand that money is paid to the athlete only when they leave the school. Also some copy/paste from an article....which basically makes this whole ruling useless for all but the schools that play on TV. The compensation will be paid into a trust fund. However, if a school does not try to sell anything with the players' names, images and likenesses, there will be no money to pay into the trust fund. A player then would be limited to his cost-of-attendance scholarship. Any payments to athletes would not be immediate. The ruling said regulations on pay will not take effect until the start of the next FBS football and Division I basketball recruiting cycle. Wilken said they will not affect any prospective recruits before July 1, 2016. Lawyers for O'Bannon and the 19 others had sought to have millions of dollars put in trust funds for the athletes. Former athletes will not be paid, because they gave up their right to damages in a pretrial move so the case would be heard by a judge, not a jury.
