Thought of another one: Monkey Island 2. {Spoiler}That whole "LeChuck is Guybrush's brother" mind-f*** at the end...which is mostly forgotten for the next one due to the "booker" not being part of the sequels.

What about the push Shinnok got as the monster heel of Mortal Kombat 4?
And on that front Strykers Cena-esque baby face run in MK3?

Building up Jin Kazama only to have Lars to replace him as the hero Jin had his time on top and got the ultimate hero send-off. The really baffling booking is how Paul went from number 2 martial artist in the world to a complete joke character.

He throws Heihachi off a cliff, finally succeeding in getting his revenge. Two years later, Kazuya starts the second Iron Fist tournament, and he turns heel by wearing a purple suit. SWERVE! Heihachi survived the fall off the cliff, and he defeats his son in the tournament. SWERVE! Heihachi throws Kazuya into a VOLCANO, a freakin' volcano, killing him...until Tekken 4.

The Marvel Super Heroes fighting game they have typical characters like Spiderman, Hulk, Wolverine, Captain America, Juggernaut, Doom...and Shuma Gorath? What the f*** was he doing in there? Talk about booking an obscure as hell character. In Knights of the Old Republic 2, the whole deal with Darth Nihilist. He's built up through the whole game as this Galactus level bad-ass. I figure the Jedi I'm finding are going to help me, train me in some sort of super special secret art that only each of them only knows one part of, and then with the full knowledge I'm going to go up against Nihilist and whip his ass. Instead, the Jedi want to kill me for absolutely no reason what so ever beyond "we're stupid assholes!" and Darth Nihilist ends up just being...some guy...and I just kill him the same way I've killed every other mook in this goofy game. The ultimate end big bad, to avoid spoilers, ends up being very underwhelming.

Talk about booking an obscure as hell character. Speaking of Marvel fighting games, that weirdly booked one where only have the game was Marvel characters, and then you had a bunch of rookies in a stable called Imperfects. What was that about?

Talk about booking an obscure as hell character. Speaking of Marvel fighting games, how in the world can they put the likes of Spider-man and Cyclops in the same ring as Thanos and Dormammu and expect us to believe that they could win?

Thought of another one: Monkey Island 2. {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}That whole "LeChuck is Guybrush's brother" mind-f*** at the end...which is mostly forgotten for the next one due to the "booker" not being part of the sequels. If I'm remembering the story right, that one's intentionally forgotten in the next one. Monkey Island 3 is a thing, it's just so epic that no computer system could ever run it, so we're never going to see it. {Spoiler}Which is just the developers way of saying "we're not telling that part of the story because reasons."
So we don't get an explanation for just how Guybrush escaped that voodoo-powered illusion lie that was the carnival ending. It just goes right into Curse of Monkey Island. Which...hey, that game was awesome, so who cares?

Shao Kahn. Turns into a spectacular light-show when he's received mortal injuries. SWERVE! He's not dead.
At least Shang Tsung had the excuse of just falling over in MK1. Kahn, for all of the elaborate ways he's put people over, doesn't hang up his boots because the bookers can't get enough of the Kahnamania.

Except when Creative The Elder Gods got enough of his political bullshit in MK(2011). Unless he's a secret in MKX.

Raiden's inexplicable face turn between Mortal Kombat 1 and 2.
I get it, he was getting positive crowd reactions and they had to build up a face who could convincingly challenge Shao Kahn and Kintaro, but the turn itself felt like it came out of left field.

Save for his game ending in the first game, he was mostly a tweener in the first one, wasn't he?

Save for his game ending in the first game, he was mostly a tweener in the first one, wasn't he? Oh sure, but from clear tweener with selfish, destructive tendencies to all-good leader of the face faction with no buildup? Bookers need more patience than that, crowd reaction be damned.

The whole Raiden/MGS2 was definitely a swerve, but in the context of the overall MGS plot I think it's one of the most brilliant and meta things I've seen in any video game.

Metal Gear Solid 2 is probably the biggest swerve in all of video games. I don't think anything like that could happen again, since the Internet is a lot bigger than it was in 2001.

There's your problem. The Marvel Super Heroes fighting game they have typical characters like Spiderman, Hulk, Wolverine, Captain America, Juggernaut, Doom...and Shuma Gorath? What the f*** was he doing in there? Talk about booking an obscure as hell character. Crossover games, especially fighting game, almost always have one obscure character, which only makes sense from a financial point of view as it will get the attention of the fans of the obscure character and might convince them to buy the game to see him or her beat up everyone else and people who never heard of him or her will be interested in who that weirdo is and as a result, that might generate sales for the lesser-known franchise. In comparison, the only risk is that those who didn't know the character don't like him or her and the statu-quo remains unchanged. From what I understand, Kahn likes to take a page from Dr. Doom's (comic) book and whenever he gets "killed", turns out that whoopsie! It was a Doombot/Khan clone all along. Well you can't really disregard his ending considering he kind of ends up destroying the World. Because he was bored. Sure he obviously didn't end up actually doing it as Liu Kang won (which BTW means that Raiden isn't even the strongest man in that realm so protecting it is out of his eague) but still, THIS guys gets put in charge of Earthrealm's safety?! Must be another one of the Elder Gods' strokes of genius.
