I like how surprisingly civil this thread is turning out.

My Little Pony sucks. Care Bears are the best! I'll admit, if there was a new Care Bears cartoon similar to MLP, I'd watch that shit all day. I wouldn't buy merchandise, dress up as one, and call myself a Care Bro or something, but I'd watch.

it's heartbreaking when a kid comes across pony porn when trying to look up their favorite pony. No.

I think it's partly because a very vocal subsection of the fandom treated themselves as the most important consumers of the series - above the girls whose femininity it celebrated - and the ties with MRAs and the kind of people who need to put 'bro' in front of anything to make it seem more masculine. There are few groups more loathsome around than the MRA crowd.

I've noticed "Bronies" seem to have a lot in common with one another. All I'm saying on the subject.

While I'm not about to snap up any FiM merch anytime soon, it's a very well put together show. In essence, it's like a Tex Avery cartoon with more songs. That gradually mixed with the "friendship" theme, which attracted a lot of people who felt like outsiders for whatever reason, and the fandom ballooned. Also, sometimes they'll do cool shit like this:

Yeah, I agree with this. For the most part, I hate the majority of what the brony community finds entertaining. From the more subverted and somewhat mean-sprited shit like Friendship is Witchcraft, to the plethora of run to the ground unfunny memes. I also hate the heavy love for grimdark crap like Cupcakes and Rainbow Factory. Not to mention shit like this (Warning: Graphic) Not so much for the content within (which I do find disturbing), but the intentionally cutesy video pic. I can't imagine how many kids (Not just labeling little girls because I'm well aware that it is widely enjoyed by kids of both genders) clicked this thinking they were getting a HD version of Pinkie Pie's "Smile song", and instead got a video of Pinkie brutally murdering her friends. I love the show. I buy the merch, I have more pony shirts than you could think of, and yes, I occasionally go online and not shut the f*** up about how much I consider Rarity the best pony, but I try my hardest to not associate with the (Mostly negative) hivemind that makes up a majority of the community, who for the most part, seem to hate anything that doesn't associate with their precious headcannon.

I remember catching a few episodes of this show a couple years back just to see what everyone was so crazy about and enjoying them, but didn't love the show enough to commit myself to it. Before that, though, the pony craze always struck me as being yet another fad a lot of people on the Internet would be into for a while before it faded away.
What I could never understand, and still can't understand, is why there always has to be a huge controversy around the whole thing. It may not be such an an issue now (or maybe I just stopped paying attention...), but there used to be a period where I couldn't find any forum where a thread about MLP wouldn't attract some kind of ridiculous argument between fans and those who just didn't get it: mods would get involved and people would be banned, all because some grown men on the Internet are big fans of this one particular children's franchise. Some of them go crazy with their fandom and overtly express it to the point where it gets annoying, others happen to make disturbing fanart, fanfiction, etc. But this has always happened whenever a children's franchise got popular: Pokemon, Avatar, Korra, Sonic the Hedgehog, My Little Pony, etc. And we've all known that.
So what is it about MLP in particular? Why are obsessive, creepy, and annoying fans of other children's shows tolerated and MLP fans/bronies/whatever constantly scrutinized? Is it just because MLP is a cartoon based on a franchise that's mainly appealed to little girls? Is that what this all boils down to? Whatever the case may be, I don't think the whole pony phenomenon is worth all of this attention. When you get right down to it, nothing about the MLP fandom on its own is really unusual. Popular children's cartoons will inevitably gain adult fans and some of those fans will be annoying, while others will be perverts. It's not really that big of a deal.

When my daughter was out of town I found myself watching it without her a few times. It's cute, so what's wrong with that? But I guess any super fan of anything will annoy somebody else. One man's Metallica is another man's My Little Pony. And I'd like to go on record as saying that the Twilight Sparkle vs Tirek fight was more Dragon Ball Z than whole the Dragon Ball movie!

I've watched the first season, and it was pretty enjoyable, I suppose. It is amazing how a show where the subject material has never been anything special has been turned into the phenomenon it is now.
I've never gotten around to watching past that though.
Honestly I don't think anybody, even Twilight fans, should be criticized for being fans of something. They like a show that I don't. So what? As long as they don't force their opinions down people's throats then I don't really care. Enjoy what you want, and screw what others think.
If your opinion can be swayed simply by someone else criticizing you then it probably wasn't that strong an opinion anyway.

I like how surprisingly civil this thread is turning out. I know. If this was 2011, we'd be fighting in the streets over it. I think it's more a case of "Eh, agree to disagree" civility over what it was back then.

If you had a group of diehard fans for anything else, it wouldn't be a deal, but the brony community almost thrives on being worth talking about on some podunk news site

MLP and it's "bronies" are much more widely known and in your face than the rest. Simple as that. Are you really trying to say that MLP is the most popular, widely known children's franchise/fandom? If so, that's really something I'd dispute. I think this has more to do with what you're choosing to notice and pay attention to.

The only brony I personally know is my 18 year old cousin, and just the fact that he actually gives a shit about something surprises me. I feel like most are probably level-headed individuals who are fans of a cartoon. I like Adventure Time and I f***ing loved Yo Gabba Gabba, so what can I really say here? I feel like the Internet made the Bronies into something more than I think they are. The MLP fanbase is likely along the same lines of other fanbases(in terms of ratio between normal and obsessive fans) but it's the one that the spotlight shines on. I could be completely off base here, but that's my feelings on them.

Moreso than Pokemon, at the very least? I 'd love to see some evidence for this.[/quote] I think it's because it's the newest one on the block that it happens to feel like the most widely known. I remember when Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh and the early 2000's anime boom were the newest thing it seemed like they were everywhere.
