I used to hang around a card and hobby shop. It wasn't really my kind of place, but my roommate and one of my friends worked there so I'd hang around and even help out every now and then. Every MLP fan I met there, which is admittedly a small sample size, had a real martyr complex about it. The slightest comment about how odd it is to watch a show primarily designed for little girls as a twentysomething and instead of going "Nah dude, you're underestimating it. The writing's more clever than you think." they'd act like I'd just personally insulted them. I had one of them DEMAND an apology from me. Straight up stand up from her table and demand I apologize because I told her I thought it was weird how much people obsess over it. Than she accused me of bullying her. The girl is twenty goddamn two. In my case, it's been bad experiences with a small group of people. I am now picturing there being a Public SILAS Announcement concerning this and laughing my ass off. God that would be amazing.

I gotta watch the documentary, where did the stigma began? I mean, like with the real creepy fans, not the normal fandom.

Just want to point out before MLP, Naruto threads were the ones in that position of fast movement and high numbers and it seems like everyone had a Naruto av or sig. 2008ish I wanna say. Didn't last as long as the pony threads. There were only about a dozen and each took a month to reach 30 pages (our previous limit). Believe me, I know; I have them bookmarked

Honestly, a lot of people get defensive when someone says they're weird for liking something, and it's not likely to have been the first time they've heard it or tried to defend it.

For me, it's just the way a lot of people almost seem to mold their own personality around it.
I get that other fanbases do the same, and I find it weird in those instances too.

Found it annoying really early on but got over it pretty quickly because it's really quite harmless and easy to ignore. In fairness I've never watched the show, for all I know it's amazing and would be the greatest thing ever. Just doesn't really seem like it'd appeal to me. But I don't judge, I like Cardcaptor Sakura among other girly things. I don't care what people are interested in. We all have our tastes and that's cool.

Sorry Glitch, at first I was going to merge this thread inside the regular MLP one, but then I realized what the intent was and put it back. That's why it accidently has me listed as the thread creator. You're just stealing all his glory.

I understand the argument that the writing is smart, but you know what else has smart writing? Shows geared towards adults. Not all of them do. Exhibit A: Duck Dynasty. Bleh.

There's a difference between liking a kids show and acting like you're the primary audience, basing your entire identity and having a really thin skin when asked not to make everything about MLP. I mean, holy shit I was playing the Shaun the Sheep game on steam earlier today. It's a cute and pretty competent Lost Vikings clone and I enjoy the show but I'm not trying to pretend it's aimed at 25 year olds like some bronies that I've run into at Uni.

I like the show, and anyone who doesn't like it is free do so. I'll respect you as long as you respect me.

Then, maybe skip that one and watch The Wire instead...or Mad Men...or Breaking Bad...or the Sopranos...or Fargo...or Sherlock...or Silicon Valley...or True Detective...or the myriad other shows that are well written, well acted and made for people other than schoolchildren. I get that there's a lot of crap TV out there made for adults, but there's a helluva lot that isn't.

As for the porn, yeah, there's porn of other stuff, but you usually have to actively search for it. With MLP, I didn't find the porn, it unfortunately found me.

There are some smart, well-written shows that are primarily targeted at children. There are also poorly written ones, or ones that skew too young to be smart in the way that appeals to adults. And there are smart, well-written shows that are primarily targeted at adults. There are also schlocky, awful shows targeted at adults. I don't see what's wrong with enjoying both, or exclusively one or the other. Who cares?

I've watched the show, I've enjoyed it, I don't see myself strong affiliated to it.
However I tend to shy away from being a part of a fandom. Rather than being a fan of. And I have found a number of them to be reprehensible, but not so much bigger than in any 'community.' And honestly my preferences is that if I am going to really pick apart/criticize something, then it is going to be a group I feel affiliated with.
And any negative behaviors the bronies are known for aren't any different than the negative behavior of nerd/geeks in general so I don't need to hone in the focus of my critical eye to just them.

For me personally, I choose to watch the well crafted show made for adults because I'm an adult.

Cartoons help me mentally and all that.

Watched bits and pieces of the documentary, I don't have a problem with anyone being a fan of a cartoon, shit one buddy made fun of me for liking regular show. Just found about the cloppers...it's sad that people put them on the same category as the normal mlp fans.
