Maybe I'm just watching with the benefit of hindsight but those Glacier vignettes being shown around the time of "The Bash" 1996 literally look like an advert for Mortal Kombat and nothing else.
I remember it being that way back in 96 but years later it seems even worse than seeing it the first time around. I'm sure people were expecting Sub Zero to walk out on Nitro after these vignettes.

The worst part is that they were airing during the early days of the nWo. It was like if Vince McMahon sent Duke "The Dumpster" Droese out to get revenge on Stone Cold. So jarring.

I didn't mind the vignettes the few times I saw them. But then, they would air them at least twice on every single program of WCW's. Then it lasted for what, like 6 months, or something like that? They became laughably annoying.

& Then when the guy debuted he was nothing more than a midcard act. Lol

At the time I was interested in (but not confused by) the vignettes. What I remember most is that after all those months of hype he didn't even debut on Nitro. He debuted on WCW Pro against The Gambler. He's also told a story that "Stone Cold" was one of the other proposed names for the Glacier character.

They actually predate the nWo by about two months. I know it's crazy to think that one performer could be so hyped, but the Glacier promos ran for EIGHT MONTHS. Every show, always one or two clips with the promise "your entire world is about to change." A WCW Magazine article at the time speculated that Glacier might actually be, not one person, but a group of people. The nWo coming in slowly as invaders did make it seem like they might somehow be linked. But then the nWo took off and we didn't get a payoff for eight months until WCW's Sunday afternoon pre-taped C-Show debut in November. It's weird to put yourself in the place of a '96 viewer seeing those promos. Super vague, airing for months with the promise "your entire world is about to change." Nothing short of an entirely new television program could live up to that promise. ...which is weird because the network promos for Thunder in early '98 don't elude to it being a wrestling show or having a name whatsoever. Just weird title-less adverts that just ended with a date and a time.

Am I wrong in remembering Glacier vignettes again in 2000? Was he ever suppose to go anywhere?

I was surprised to see one on the Nitro after Bash at the Beach 96. I didn't realise they started that early.

It's always interesting to me. Even an in-depth knowledge of Glacier.

Am I wrong in remembering Glacier vignettes again in 2000? Was he ever suppose to go anywhere? Yeah, they re-aired the vignettes and he re-debuted and it was treated as a joke by the announcers. I think that is what led him to sell the gimmick to Kaz Hayashi but am not sure.

Kaz would come out with the armor when he did his entrance. I remember Glacier even selling the eye contact. I really wish they had done something with Kaz being sold the gimmick. Instead of making him look like a sucker Asian stereotype in typical Russo fashion, do it up so that Kaz is actually a lot better than Glacier and starts winning as "Glacier". This leads to the real Glacier getting jealous and demanding that he give the gimmick back, turning him full heel, and have them in a match where Kaz wins the gimmick. Would have been cool to see.

I don't know about real life, but in WCW/nWo: Revenge Glacier was awesome.

Such a huge, stupid grin came across my face seeing those vignettes again. I remember being so hyped to finally see the guy debut and then the crushing disappointment shortly after. Like YAKMAN is ICHIBAN said, he was boss in WCW/nWo Revenge though. Awesome superkick.

It started before Hall and Nash even showed up as one of those random stuff from the Observer posts had this little gem: People are acting like Meltzer is an alien for thinking Raw is better than NXT, but this would have made Hall and Nash DOA when they debuted.

when he debuted he had the horrible blue mood lighting throughout his match (ala Sin Cara) too, which made it extra annoying.
He debuted on WCW Pro, and if I swear the announcers said he'd melt if they turned the normal lights on.... this is hazy though, maybe it was a Heenan joke I'm misremembering

The Attitude era spent so much time shitting on the Rock 'n' Wrestling and New Generation eras (i.e. the return of the Blue Blazer as a satire of super hero gimmicks), I'm surprised Vince didn't do this. "Ok, you want a blue collar everyman? I'll give you a blue collar everyman! Duke "The Dumpster" Droese!"
