If Diesel was potrayed as a cool badass heel instead of a cheesy ass babyface then maybe his title run would of fared a lot better, since he was immediately a lot more likeable and interesting once he lost the title and turned heel.
Once again another mishandled title run.

But Reigns is nowhere near as big as Diesel so he should be better than Diesel was. He's roughly the same size as John Cena, so he should be able to wrestle at least half as good as Cena if WWE expects him to take his spot. |

The difference is, Diesel was cool. If you were the same age you were when Diesel was about now watching Reigns you'd more than likely think he was cool. I don't know, man....  He doesn't look very cool. |

When people use the Diesel example as it pertains to Reigns as an insult, they mean that WWE put all their eggs into his basket despite there, at the time, being 3 guys significantly more over and more qualified than him for the same position. No one "chose" Diesel. Vince just manufactured his push out of a one off battle royal pop in a ring full of jobbers.
The entire thing, then, and today, is an indictment on Vince's personal preferences being obliterated by reality, foresight and common sense. In fact, until JBL, Diesel was the worst drawing long term champion in company history.
Diesel was cool. But he bombed in WWF. Dude owes his entire drawing power to WCW, strangely enough.
