Couple nights ago I watched I Hate Christian Laettner. The 30 for 30 series can make anything super compelling it feels like.

Was a good one. if this would have happen now with social media and your star QB died of cancer everyone would have been rooting for them to win

I thought "The Gospel According to Mac" was the best installment in volume 3 in a runaway and it might have been the best 30 for 30 since "Brothers in Exile" premiered last November.
There was so little I knew about the University of Colorado Buffaloes football teams of the late 1980s and early 1990s outside of the Fifth Down Game against Missouri. I had no knowledge of who Sal Aunese was, that he was stricken with cancer, that he died at such a young age, or that he had a child with Bill McCartney's daughter. The best 30 for 30s are the ones in which you learn something new and I felt like I was learning something interesting and fascinating almost every moment. I liked that they gave it a two-hour run time, because there's no earthly way that story could have been told in 60 or 90 minutes.
I also like how fair it was. I had some concerns that they were going to portray McCartney as some lunatic televangelist akin to Jimmy Lee Swaggart or Jim Bakker, but they were very honest about his story. The documentary didn't shy away from the skeletons in his closet (nor did he) and it wasn't afraid to touch on some of the more unsavory things he believes in, but it felt very even and honest as opposed to a one-sided "Oh man, look at this nutjob..." sort of hit piece. My biggest concern was they'd give McCartney the "Jesus Camp" treatment and that was about as far from what they did as possible.
A slam dunk and the best of this volume so far. It's just a shame that after "Chasing Tyson", it looks like it'll be a while before we get another new documentary.

I just finished "Chasing Tyson" and I think my biggest takeaway from it is how Mike Tyson is this beloved comedic actor and (literal) cartoon character despite the fact that he was one of the most abhorrent people to ever participate in sports.
He's a convicted rapist, he allegedly brutally abused and tortured his first wife, he bit an opponent twice when things weren't going his way in a fight, he threatened numerous reporters - male and female - with violence (and in some female reporters' cases, sexual violence), he threatened to kill another fighter's children...how did everyone just kind of wash that all aside and settle on Tyson being this beloved, zany goofball?

I think the combination of time and Tyson himself admitting he was a complete asshole, while at least seeming contrite have allowed people forgive him.

My biggest takeway is that both Holyfield and Tyson made a shit ton of money and somehow ended up broke.

The ESPN 30-for-30 documentary Prince Of Pennsylvania that focuses on the Schultz brothers is now available on Netflix. Not a lot of new information, but a good episode regardless. Just goes to show that if someone is losing their marbles you need to get them some help or get out of there lest someone get hurt or killed for no reason whatsoever.

I really liked The Prince of Pennsylvania. It was a story that came about when I was around 10, and I don't remember hearing about it until this. I had heard about Dave and Mark Schultz, but not about what happened. It just hits on a lot. Which I love in these. Like, I'm a Miami fan, but the two U docs were a LOT of fluff. In this, you get the socioeconomic issues that were constantly at hand between all parties. That Du Pont can't buy competitive prowess or love, and he was going to kill some of the only people who ever treated him as equals. And the candor that everyone really spoke with really separated this from so many 30 for 30's. You get used to half-truths and canned answers and self-serving answers and revisionist storytelling. This was all so painfully honest. Like at the end when their Mom said that she must have been a bad mother for her son to get killed that way, or Mark detailing the way his brother died. Like, we all have these vivid memories of bad things that have happened in our lives and these people just completely laid it all out there. It's interesting and sad and uncomfortable and kind of beautiful. I can't imagine Foxcatcher is needed to be seen at this point.

I don't really know if these qualify as "Easter eggs" or anything like that, but I was just about to watch "The Gospel According to Mac" on Netflix and noticed that in the 30 for 30 volume III signature at the start of the program, they have video clips and images of subjects yet to be broached by the series. I wonder if it's a hint as to what's coming down the road later in this volume.
They include (at least according to what I've seen):
- A fan holding a sign protesting the NFL's "scab" players - LeBron James at his "The Decision" announcement - Duke University men's lacrosse players

Next one airs Next Saturday Four Falls of Buffalo Ken Rodgers December 12, 2015 Examining the four-straight Super Bowl loses of the Buffalo Bills in the early 1990s. I'd be much more excited about this if it were produced independently by an individual director, instead of being an NFL Films production. The 30 for 30 documentaries that have been produced by league media outlets ("Four Days in October", "Once Brothers", "Bad Boys") have been remarkably disappointing. Then again, NFL Films was responsible for "Elway to Marino", which - despite not more clearly painting John Elway as the whiny, entitled prima donna that he was - is one of the editions that I'll frequently watch if I've got a few hours to burn.

Has Norwood ever been interviewed about this, or has he gone into Bartman-type hiding?
