I have never seen V/H/S or its sequel, but I am interested in checking those films out. Right now V/H/S 2 is available on Netflix, but not its predecessor. Is it necessary (or advisable) to see the original V/H/S before checking out its sequel? My understanding about the films is that the are comprised of mini 'found footage' films, so I don't expect there to be much (if any) plot continuity between the original film and its sequel.
The main reason why I am interested in the V/H/S is because one of the mini films featured in the sequel was directed by Timo Tjahjanto. Because I really enjoyed ''L' Is For Libido' and thought it stole the show from The ABCs of Death, I'm interested to see more of Tjahjanto's work.

Not really. The framing sequence for the first movie is referenced in the framing sequence for the second movie, but (in my opinion) since these were the weakest parts of both movies then you're not really missing out.
And "Safe Haven" was f'n awesome, but with a bit of a goofy ending.

I saw the first one a few weeks ago. I liked it, but the film style gives me a headache. It sucks because films like that only work when they are filmed that way. When I can watch part 2 I will.

I hate it when Netflix does stuff like that. I got V/H/S recently for $2 at Family Dollar. Still need to finish watching it.

I went in with low expectations and really liked the first one, this of course raised my expectations for the 2nd which I didn't think was as good. Both are certainly worth watching though. I actually watched the first on Netflix before it was taken down but they do have a habit of putting sequels up soon after removing the original.
I agree with the poster that said the footage linking the shorts together was the weakest element of both films.

I'd love to make a fan edit of them first 2
Take the Friday the13th knockoff and the Skype one from the first and replace them with Safe Haven & The zombie one from 2 and you'd have a genuinely great horror anthology IMO

They're anthology films so it's not necessarily to have seen the first one before watching the second one, even the wraparound segments are unrelated aside from taking place in the same house. I would recommend watching the original first though as I feel the sequel is overall better but the good segments of the first one are the best. I also feel the segments from the original tended to be more realistic, more believable and also more creative (the sequel has more classic monsters like zombies, ghosts, aliens, etc).
Gotta warn you, there are some stinkers in there, and then there are those where the concept is interesting but the characters are insufferable but the good parts overweight the bad in my opinion.

I feel like a couple of them have good ideas and...I don't know, ran out of money or time because they seem to give up at the end. {Spoiler}Guy gets an eye implanted and it ends up allowing him to see dead people. He also meets a girl who can hear dead people. At the end, both are murdered rather unceremoniously after having sex. The only weird thing is him taking the eye out to not see the ghosts which is a stupid idea when running away.
Although, I keep thinking the final ghosts that show up were supposed to be a family he accidentally killed in a drunk driving accident that led to him getting the eye...but that could just be me making nonsense up.

I didn't really care for either of them, but the one segment about the cult was pretty damn good.

I generally don't enjoy found footage anymore but the V/h/S series does it in a way that still intrigues me. It basically creates a space for new/up-and-coming directors to showcase their stuff. I get why people don't get into it, but if you can't appreciate the level of craftsmanship that went into the Cult one in the VHS2 - you're not really watching. That thing was executed amazingly well. The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger was the Skype one if I recall and I liked how that one played out, but I'm - hold on gotta tag it for spoilers {Spoiler}really into alien conspiracy type stuff and thought this was a cool way to look at a microcosm of what that would entail

I just saw the first V/H/S film and enjoyed it. As the film went on, it seemed to get less and less believable/realistic, but it was nevertheless a good watch.
I agree that the ending to the Skype tape (The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger) made no sense.
StuntGranny: Was the 'cult' story you spoke of in the first film, or its sequel? I ask because I didn't get a vivid sense that I saw a cult when watching the original V/H/S film, unless you count the supposed antagonists in the final segment (You Shouldn't Be Here) featured in V/H/S.
I am really looking forward to seeing V/H/S 2, and to seeing more of Timo Tjahjanto's work in particular.

I legit jumped in the 2nd when the aliens bumrushed the living room. I recently finished watching V/H/S 2 (after having seen the first one about 1-2 weeks ago), and I found the film featuring the aliens to be the weakest of all the films showcased in V/H/S 2. In fact, I'd say it's the weakest of any film featured in V/H/S 2 or its predecessor. Yeah, Timo Tjahjanto didn't disappoint. If you liked that film, be sure to check out The ABCs of Death: His feature in that anthology ('L' is For Libido) is even better than Safe Haven. I liked the first three films featured in V/H/S 2, but not the last one. I liked all of the films featured in the original V/H/S, but the final one based around Skype featured an ending that didn't make sense from watching the film (I had to read a synopsis to make sense of the plot, even though it was literal and lacked metaphors). I read that the Succubus from the first V/H/S was supposed to make an appearance in the sequel, but I saw no trace of her.
