He was so popular that the people at the ticket counters and gates left. You couldn't hold them back. And nor would you want to. I remember that great moment when the chief of Police ordered his men to stand down and let the people in because it was unfair for them to miss such an event.

Well that escalated quickly... It was probably because from Jan 2000 - His injury in 2001 HHH was the best wrestler in the world. Damn, I never realized Guerrero, Angle, and Benoit didn't wrestle from Jan 2000 through 2001. They did, but weren't as good during that time frame as HHH. Guerrero was injured twice in that period too. HHH vs Cactus Jack- Royal Rumble 2000 HHH vs Cactus Jack- No Way Out 2000 HHH vs The Rock- Backlash 2000 HHH vs The Rock- Judgement Day 2000 HHH vs Y2J- Fully Loaded 2000 HHH vs Austin vs Rikishi vs Undertaker vs The Rock vs Angle- Armageddon 2000 HHH vs Steve Austin- No Way Out 2001 HHH vs Undertaker- Wrestlemania XVII HHH & Austin vs Benoit & Jericho- Raw Benoit & Angle had some classics during that period, but not as many as HHH I reckon.

I grew to not like him, but I was there at the Garden the night he came back. It was a huge pop, because it was a known superstar coming back from a serious injury in the days before the Interwebs followed everything in 'dis business.' But my interest died down once it was the ol' HHH again.

That reaction when he first came back also reminds us of the fact that he would've made a great face after Wrestlemania 17. The crowd in Houston was begging for it but they didn't give it to them

All I remember is the crowd popped even louder when he spit the water.

I don't care what anyone say, Hunter/Cactus(both matches) and the Iron man with the Rock were 5 stars

I wasn't even expecting that pop when it happened. I do think he deserved it, though.

It's easy to forget that from late '99 until his injury in '01, Triple H was one of the best wrestlers on the planet as far as all-around talents go. His mic skills were long winded but he was generally a heel so that was great and wasn't stale yet, he was a super over heel people wanted to see get killed. He could wrestle almost any style and made almost any wrestler (even Taka) look like a million bucks, and he would feud with or even make look like a threat people like Earl Hebner. Triple H from '99 to '01 had his working boots on and was a notable absence from the InVasion, so in early 2002 when lots of guys were getting stale, Rock was around less and less and WCW was dead, he was primed to be one of the hottest things in the business once more. Hence, the monster pop.
And then 2002 happened, almost as good an example of how to kill a whole bunch of great talents and angles as 2001 was.
