The only thing I usually have to defend is when people ask me why I watch it, because I'm a girl. Nobody ever brings up the "fake" argument lol.

House didn't really cure people, David Copperfield didn't make a statue disappear, and Betty Crocker wasn't a real person.

If they're a dope, I don't press on it. I just let them on their merry way.
If they seriously just don't get it and are curious, I might indulge them with what I see in it, but it's still usually a short conversation.
We all like different shit. Beating on what someone does in their off-time is for children.

No, because I don't feel like I should have to defend something that entertains me Agree. It's like if someone asks me why I like a certain band or whatever. "I just do."

I just say "It's a live-action movie, and it entertains me". If that doesn't work, I mention Bull Dempsey.

I usually laugh along with them. It's easy to mock wrestling, it's very hard to defend it.
Most people seem to "get it" it just doesn't interest them, so that's cool. But someone who is violently opposed to the idea of anybody even tossing a shred of a second towards wrestling, I just let them have it.... there's no way to get them to give an inch, and you end up looking worse afterward anyway.
It's like a One Direction fan trying to sway fans on Blabbermouth.net ... even if all you want is, "Okay, I get it, to each their own"... even getting that is like pulling teeth.

I usually go, "its fun."
And that's about as argumentative as I'll get about it.
If someone really wants to press the issue, I'll talk with them about it, but for the most part people don't really care.
Its funny because people have this stereotype of wrestling fans as unintelligent rubes, but more often than not its that exact type of person who spends any length of time trying to explain that "wrestling's fake."
That being said, I'm always quick to offer people Chikara or PWG DVDs if they really want to talk wrestling. Like if they're just hell bent on getting into it with me I'll tell them they have to watch one of these first, then we can talk.

Honestly, all the people I hang out with like, or at least respect wrestling, so I have no need anymore to defend it.

I've never really had to for a while but I usually do if I have to. Not so much the concept of wrestling but the fact that I watch it. If someone doesn't like it they don't like it, it's not on me to convert them. I find myself being the "you know it's fake" guy when I see my family/friends getting wrapped up in some lame reality show more than I've ever been on the other end of it these days.

I had this friend who didn't know wrestling was well not real. Though wasn't a fan his mind was blown to shreds he couldn't believe it.

As I'm from the UK, a lot of comments about wrestling usually start with "Mick McManus, Les Kellett, Big Daddy, that was real wrestling....". Not sure if they mean real as in 'shoot', or real as in 'better' than the current product. Either way I can't be arsed to defend it anymore. If you don't get 'it' you don't get 'it'. I suppose at the very least it shows how ingrained wrestling is in the minds of a certain older age group..... Anyway - 'Big Daddy'? Are you actually mental or something?

I have felt embarrassed for people who tell me "it's fake" like they honestly believe they have some insider knowledge that I don't. Though it shouldn't, it still surprises me when there's always one person in the crowd who has to be the first to say "it's fake" and then look at me like he just dropped an atomic truth bomb on my world.

I don't really get the "fake" comments much anymore, but I rarely mention that I am a fan to people. If someone were to ask why I watch it, I just say I just like it for some reason.

I'm not self-conscious about being a wrestling fan, so I like being asked that question by people if they bring it up. It's fun to explain why I like this zany industry, and if you can properly articulate what makes it unique and gives it its appeal, you can even win some people over or at least get to look at it from a different angle. Some of the "IT'S FAKE, DUMMY" people aren't stupid, they're just ignorant and don't understand the nuances.

Only if it happens in person and the guy is a huge dick about it.
I have no shame defending it since everything else that is enjoyed is also silly. Especially men covered in pads who chase a ball around, and slap each others' butts.

I am surprised this is still a thing, but back in the day I would explain that it was the same way I like old Bruce Lee and Sonny Chiba movies, sure it is(for lack of a better term "fake") but it is entertaining.

HELL no. I love it and I have the utmost respect for the workers and what they put their bodies through, but it's too silly to seriously defend. I poke fun at it even when it's good.
