Roger Craig does not get enough respect. Dude revolutionized the way running backs were used in the NFL by becoming a legit threat as a receiving option coming out of the backfield.
Joe Thornton gets way too much respect. He's SAWFT and doesn't have killer instinct to be a good Captain. The Sharks need to move on from Jumbo soon or we'll miss whatever window we have to win a Championship.

I've really went off Jon Jones recently. I used to think he was a good dude with a decent head on his shoulders, as well as being a great athlete, but the whole Cormier feud really revealed him to be a gigantic wanker. As far as not enough respect, I feel people should stop calling Weidman a fluke etc. Dude's legit. Well I think with Jones he is a case of it goes both ways as people will bitch at him over anything no matter how small and insignificant it is but his behavior over the past couple of years has quite often made him look like a major arsehole. Also I'll agree with on Weidman as this whole it was a fluke argument is total bullshit. Oh, I agree people have given him shit unnecessarily in the past, but he's revealed himself to be a bit of a dickbag with the Cormier stuff. It comes with the territory of becoming popular in the UFC.

Too much respect: Prince Naseem Ahmed got too much respect during his "run". He showed almost no actual boxing skill and his supposed flash exposed him to danger. I saw this guy do his Schick three times and escape and I correctly surmised that the first time he would fight a real technical fighter, he'd get his **** knocked in the dirt. Well I win.
Not enough respect: Sean Elliot. The spurs have never been a flash and sizzle team. They have been consistently good and won so often bc they are great fundamental TEAM players. Sean Elliot was a great example of that. He made steals or pressed the other team so hard that the guys he defended wore him not like a suit but more like an iron maiden. His spot on passes led to scores at an amazing rate. He enabled scoring and defense in just the right place at just the right time. He hit a few big game winners while he was at it. Three NBA championships and is still a hero in SA

Thornton is a terrific talent, but for all the love he gets, he is simply unable to show up when it matters. Im going to get SO much flack for this, but Peyton Manning. Don't get me wrong, he is one of the best to play the game, but for all the praise and hype, for all the football god treatment....he's another one that hasn't won when it truly matters nearly enough.

I had this argument with someone the other dday. Manning has only won 1 SB, but his teams are always in contention and always in the mix and a threat in the playoffs. Every. Year. That kind of consistancy takes winning when it matters and winning big games.

Not enough respect: Anybody who was a peer of Sugar Ray Leonard(Duran, Pryor, Hearns, Hagler).

I guess I'm having trouble with the idea of someone getting too much respect. If I were to try to come up with someone, I would want to think of someone who is treated like a saint, but is actually a bad person unworthy of his respect. I think any athlete could be worthy of respect, regardless of how well he played. It's his attitude and off-field actions that decide how much respect he deserves.
How about an athlete who does not deserve the amount of praise he gets or someone who has been given too many accolades? If I think about it this way, then Jeter definitely comes to mind. I never saw him as an elite player, yet he was being deified during his retirement tour.

WAY TOO MUCH respect is given to Jordan. If only everyone knew what a massive scumbag he is as a human being, then perhaps their rose-colored glasses wouldn't be so rosy. I never liked him growing up, but mostly because everyone else did and i always went against the grain with stuff like that. However, over time, I've learned just how big of an ass he is. I'm convinced that he had a role in his father getting murdered, and that his time in minor league baseball was a cover-up for being suspended from the NBA for gambling/mafia activity that led to his dad's death. Eddie Griffin said the same thing regarding his time in baseball. I don't believe Michael had anything to do with his father getting murdered, arrogant as Michael appears to be at times, I don't believe he is the heartless monster that people paint him out to be. I definitely admire his talent and his will to win when he competed. However, I think what most people mistake for "assholeness" is a guy who was just driven, confident, and hated the prospect of losing so he carried himself with a massive chip on his shoulder.

I don't agree that he gets too much respect, because I think his respect is deserved, I'm more leaning towards "overrated" here, but Bo Jackson. He is probably the most freakish athlete ever, but his stats in baseball were mediocre compared to the praise he gets. And he didn't get enough of a chance in football before his body gave out on him.
But watching his 30 for 30 doc and just in general when he's mentioned, you would think he was the second coming of Jesus or something.
And I disagree with Thornton getting too much respect. He's put up more than a point per game pace in his career (675 games, 740 points). Obviously he's always left a little something to be desired in the playoffs, and deserves some heat for t hat, but I think the bashing goes a little bit too far. I say this as someone from the Boston area who has to listen to people frequently bash the guy even though he hasn't been on the Bruins in almost 10 years.

I dunno if it's too much respect or not, but I do find it hypocritical how David Ortiz has been linked to steroids but people don't call him out about how he said anybody who used steroids should be banned for life. Of course, I also think Big Papi is a big phony (and I am not a Yankees fan saying that)
