I remember being constantly underwhelmed with AJ having Ric in his corner. At the time Bobby Roode was so painfully mediocre I would've said I didn't want to see him with Flair either. ...but you know who really should've had Flair in his corner and got a good heel run out of it?

He doesn't need anyone's endorsement. He's not the next anything, he's the first AJ Styles.

I didn't like it at the time because, prior to Hogan's arrival, it felt like AJ was riding high as a babyface champion.
I do remember laughing when AJ's Flair-esque robe suddenly had a hood on it, and AJ just says "The hood sells tickets".

It'd be a hell of a lot better than "Pope is a dog fighter, literally a pimp, and otherwise squanders money given to his ministry. No, seriously, if we made him a sharecropper with seven abandoned families, this would hardly be any more racist" as an angle for him, instead of that abomination of a feud with Samoa Joe.

I'm so glad I wasn't watching TNA at that point. "Corrupt street preacher" isn't a terrible idea for a character, but good Lord almighty those parts of it were just horrendous.

They were probably a rematch away from having Samoa Joe beat him by convincing him there were ghosts in the ring.

The whole Ric Flair Jr. thing was the problem. I feel if Flair was his manager, and he stayed as AJ Styles and kept the title through 2010 and maybe even into 2011, it would have been fine.
