What did you think of him when he debuted?
I couldn't stand him. The way he said "WWF" like "Doubleyoudoublyoueff" drove me insane. Also his face, voice and corny humor.
He doesn't bother me that much anymore, probably because my eyes and ears have been abused by Cole, Lawler, JBL, Striker and Booker T for all these years.

I loved him because I always listened to WPLJ in the morning before going to school. Still can't believe I got him to sign my WWF Fan Fest program a few years back. Nice guy.

I didn't mind him, shockingly. Thinking back, my attitudes toward wrestling (and really, a lot of things) didn't change until the internet started unveiling various aspects of life in my mind, so by then I had grown used to him enough to not be affected by the fact that he was basically lame.
He was an enjoyable lame, at least, and I'm still quite good with that.
And I guess because I was fine with Pettingill, I was fine with Cole when he first started too.

I thought he was a bit annoying. I never cared for him. I preferred Mean Gene. Also, when he appeared with Stephanie Wiand it was even worse as she was terrible.

I have fond memories of him from when I was a kid. When I see him today via old clips, I'm not exactly offended as his whole act was aimed towards kids which is a point people miss.

I thought he was a bit annoying. I never cared for him. I preferred Mean Gene. They were smart to have Todd debut while Mean Gene was still there; that way, it didn't come across (at least, to this high schooler not ruined quite so by the wonderousness of wrestling) as TOO obvious a replacement.

He was the worst on-air talent WWE ever had. At least Rob Bartlett had the good sense to phone it in - Todd's incessant "look at me because I'm TRYING to entertain" was way more insufferable than Bartlett.
God, I wish Vince actually liked REAL pro wrestling announcers or never tried to mold the great ones into his own moronic image.

What gimmick would Vince give Solie to make him "entertaining"?

Gordon would have developed cirrhosis halfway through the dark match of his first Wrestlemania.

I thought he was a bit corny and annoying, but he wasn't bad at his job. He was much better than Rob Bartlett, though they didn't do the same thing. Todd could go through all the information about the upcoming PPVs and get all the right points across and get through it pretty well and transition back to the announcers. He seemed pretty good on his feet, so to speak. I thought he was pretty good at his job; he was just a bit annoying, especially when he was playing off Stephanie Wiand.

He was okay on Mania, the Saturday morning kids-orientated show as he fit right in. Quite annoying/Disney "ain't this zaney folks" style of presenting nobody over 14 likes. But when the started making him into a backstage interviewer or host of different segments he just became unbearable.

One of the things I found annoying about him was his vocal delivery. He used an affected radio DJ voice. I know that's what Todd does for a living, but I found it pretty grating at times.

I liked him but I always hated Michael Cole because I thought he was like a cheap knock-off of Pettingill, Cole had a similar look when he first started out.
I remember on Livewire, or one of those Sunday morning shows, where Million Dollar Man came on and he was eating with Todd for some reason and he asks Todd for a napkin but all Todd has is a roll of toilet paper

I actually thought he was alright in the WWF. He was a bit corny, but overall he was ok for the time. His radio show, however..... is H.O.R.R.I.B.L.E.!!!!!!

He always seemed to pleased with himself for my liking. If you tell a funny joke the key is to under play it that way it's funnier. Dead-pan is more amusing than someone PHAHA'ing in your face at how brilliantly humorous they just were. Pettingill always looked smug and pleased with everything he said or did, like he'd say something not very amusing at all and do that three second "Wasn't that great!!!?!" stare into the camera. The problem is when they tried to strip away his humour and turn him into a straight interviewer he just looked like a child wearing his dad's suit.
Announcers should be bland like Sean Mooney or have some credibility like Mean Gene that way either the wrestler shines in comparison or looks better by having what can be dressed up as a 'legit' interview. Stand anyone next to Pettingzoo or whatever his name was and everyone just looks an ass.
