The unwritten rule in wrestling seems to be that when there's a replacement in a major match, the replacement goes over. This is the correct answer. Not sure if every company follows that at all times, but generally a title change to make up for the scheduled opponent not being there is a way to make up to the fans for not delivering the advertised match. I'd say it had more to do with doing the unexpected than anything else. Obviously, having Rhino (or anyone else not named Jeff Jarrett or Kevin Nash) win the title was not the plan going into Bound for Glory, so nobody expected the winner of the battle royal to actually take the title. And while Rhino ended up dropping the title almost immediately, it did establish him as a never say die babyface, having first gone through a barbaric Monster's Ball match, and then winning both the Battle Royal and then the championship. It's especially crazy when you consider that the no food, no water, no sunlight rule was still in effect for the Monster's Ball matches at that point.

As rough as the Planet Jarrett days might have been. They were a hell of a lot better than the Hogan and Immortal periods.
I like Jarrett, but I agree he didn't need to be such a dominant champion for as long as he was. It was as bad as Trips reign of terror.

A perfect example of never saying the words "Well, it couldn't get any worse." Because as we can all seem, it can. Much worse. MUCH MUCH worse.

Jeff got it back at the 2 hour special. I just watched that on Youtube. The good old days of undefeated Samoa Joe, ecw stars kicking ass without it being an "ECW revival", and Monty Brown on my TV screen.

A very strange moment, but it did seem very much a send them home happy deal.
