For your truly upper echelon level athletes, it'd be dumb to stay any longer than necessary in college when the NFL IS the job they're preparing for.
"You may be a bust." Fine, but you may shred a knee or something in college and then never get that chance. The average pro career is actually pretty short anyway. Best to maximize those earning years while you can.
The real balancing act is for these dudes to learn to manage their money. But if you're guaranteed to be a first round pick, and all the money that entails, it's ludicrous NOT to go.

Red, the NBA changed one rule but that created almost a worse problem. One and done. They're both bad sitautions, but at the very least, at least the NBA protected itself a little, forcing players to get another year of development. It'd be better if they adopted the NFL's rule, but I don't see that happening

They protected themselves (the NBA) but the kids are in the main, still not ready for the real world. Another problem is what has happened to college basketball. Don't mistake me it is still ultra competitive but that parity is gained by burning thru kids (in most cases) the recruiting is even more difficult a job than it is in football due to the turn over because of demand. I feel for the coaches. I don't know if true so this is purely speculation on my part, but I imagine the inducements to attend one school over another are getting very competitive as well. That in theory, will make dozens if not more Miami/SMU situations as far as the dirty end of it (not saying the sanctions just the behaviors). This may actually be helped once full cost of attendance is instituted and its a fairly level field....if you can afford it. Two point guards and a center every two yrs is a ton cheaper than four receivers, a RB, a QB and half a defense.

For your truly upper echelon level athletes, it'd be dumb to stay any longer than necessary in college when the NFL IS the job they're preparing for. Brandon Scherff an OT for Iowa was told last year that he'd be a first round draft pick if he declared but instead he decided to stay for his senior year so he could enjoy the full college experience and graduate with the senior class he came in with. He ended up winning the Outland Trophy and now his draft stock is even higher. There are players who want to go and play in the NFL but at the same time enjoy college life and know it's important to get the most out of it before moving on. Personally, i can't stand players who are only in college because they have to be.

I like to think all of the people who have put on the Brutus head are as proud as this guy I met at the hospital. He carries around autographed pictures of himself in costume from the mid-70s and passes them out. It's fantastic.

Conference pride man! Screw that! That'd be like me rooting for the Giants in the NFL because they're in the same division as Dallas. Ain't gonna happen.

But a conference win in the pros means nothing to the other teams in that conference. But who knows? An OSU win might draw more eyes to Big Ten schools for recruits which in turn includes Nebraska.

The Sugar Bowl between Alabama and Ohio State did an 8.9 demo rating and 28.27 million viewers. The Rose Bowl between Oregon and Florida State did an 8.3 and 28.16 million viewers.
And an Ohio State win will draw more eyes to Ohio State, not the other B1G schools.

Yeah, that Ducks Gangnam was significantly closer to the original video.
OSU's was just a bunch of dancing that sort of resembled the Gangnam Style dance.
Ducks win the War of the Gangnam Style.

Go ahead and laugh. But if OSU loses and people continue to consider the Big Ten a joke just remember, that includes your school.

But with a conference like the Big Ten that has been considered weak for awhile, a huge national title win, plus MSU winning the Cotton Bowl, Wisconsin beating Auburn in a bowl and OSU beating Alabama could give the conference a huge boost in the media which would draw attention from possible recruits. Attention that wouldn't be there if not for these wins/possible wins and now a student may consider a Big Ten team. If nothing else, why would Michigan or any team in the conference want OSU to lose? So they can say they lost to the team that couldn't win when it mattered most?

Though I will say that you're right in that in most cases no one will give their school's opposition any credit of any kind when it comes to big games as they enter full on fandom mode.

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Brutus because my mom used to (and still does) make buckeyes for Christmas when I was a kid. I'm also happy that somebody beat Alabama, because of how much the BCS was biased towards them.
