While I'm sure the money and resources are nice, it must kinda suck to be famous. Anybody who achieves any kind of mainstream fame doing something is **** all over the minute they try to do something else. Oh, so this *wrestler* thinks he can do *movies* now? He's gonna get laughed out of Hollywood! Oh, so this *wrestler* thinks he can write? Stick to what you're good at! Oh, so this *wrestler* thinks he can fight for *real*? He's gonna get embarassed! Oh, so this *wrestler* thinks he can teach yoga? What a joke! Oh, so this *wrestler* thinks he can be a podcast interviewer? Have fun with your 12 listeners. Oh, so this *wrestler* thinks he can be a musician now? May he'll open for Bieber. Oh, so this *wrestler* thinks he can be a politician? Keep to ONE fake competition. Leaving aside that the biggest action star in Hollywood is a former WWE Champion, there are multiple best-selling authors who are current/former wrestlers, the biggest MMA draw is a WWE guy, many of the highest ranked podcasts are hosted by wrestlers, and Jessie Ventura exists... ...that would be absurd to think of anybody outside of show business. It'd be like saying that it's unthinkable for somebody to go from working at Wal-Mart to doing an office job. People change their careers all the time. I think it's just some weird OCD thing that makes people think that celebrities can't POSSIBLY do something other than what we've seen them do. I heard this very argument so many times when Punk's deal with Marvel was announced. "He's just a wrestler, what makes him think he has the right to write a comic book? He's just a wrestler and should just go back to doing that."

The fact that Punk seems like a cool guy in person combined with the fact that UFC fans annoy the crap out of me I really hope Punk kicks ass in UFC.

When I first saw the news, I immediately reacted like Adrian from Rocky IV "You can't win!"
But now I'm just kinda happy for him, win or lose, he'll achieve another goal in his life. It's kinda a lose/lose scenario for him in terms of the public opinion. He beats some jobber, he's not legit. He gets beat, he's a fake wrestler turned failed fighter. The only way he'll be taken seriously is to fight and win against a top fighter... And that's not going to happen. So again, good for him checking off another achievement, getting some green while doing it. I know I'm definitely watching whenever he fights, so I guess the biggest winner in all this is the UFC buyrates.

In fairness, 'UFC fans' annoy the crap out of 'MMA fans' One name I've seen bantered about for Punk's first fight(though it seems unlikely), is Kron Gracie. Kron would also be making his MMA debut and offers some name value. He wouldn't be viewed as a complete can and is something that can garner the attention of more 'hardcore' viewers(though you'd have to be more into the BJJ/grappling world than just strictly MMA) and the marketing for 'former pro wrestler CM Punk vs. the heir to the Gracie throne, Kron Gracie' pretty much writes itself for the casual viewer. That said, Kron eats him alive if it gets to the ground, and the fact that Punk trains with Rener and co.(at least for now) makes it pretty unlikely.

Yeah, Punk seems f***ing awesome from what I've heard from him on AOW. Plus, it's always fun when a "fake" wrestler beats the shit out of someone. Didn't Lashley destroy the dude in his first fight in a matter of minutes? After the guy decided it would be great fun to mock Lashley's pro wrestling background?

I think a great deal of people, especially the "dude-bro" culture, don't realize that these "fake" wrestlers are actually tremendous athletes in a profession that requires you to be stronger than average and exposed to a great deal of physicality. Not saying Punk is going to win or be a top guy, but to think he has no chance is quite foolish, especially if he gets some solid training and preparation.

But honestly I can't help but LOL at how some people seem to think that because Brock was able to do well other pro wrestlers should be able to.

If this was Alberto Del Rio signing with UFC, I would have no problem with it since he has previous MMA experience. But Punk has none. No amount of training can prepare you for the feeling you get the first time you get your snotbox rocked or punched in the ribs. If he complained about Ryback hurting him, how is he going to react when someone hits him with malice intent?

I'm a "UFC Fan" more than an "MMA Fan". I just don't have time to follow other smaller organizations. I do watch Bellator from time to time so I know a bit about that. However, I don't profess to know everything there is to know about MMA, so hopefully I don't come off as one of those "jerk offs". Good luck to CM Punk. I will definitely be watching his debut. I want to believe he can do well, but it seems like an awfully tough sport to get into this late in the game, if that makes sense.

In my case, my problem is not so much "wrestler is doing x thing" but more "why wrestler is doing x thing"
For example, wrestlers being actors, I'm ok since wrestling is acting in the end of the day. Same with fighting since in wresling you could be a great performer if you had knowledge of martial arts.
But the problem starts when you get booked on the greatest MMA promotion without showing any credentials to demonstrate that you can't fight, or even the marvel thing where you are invited to write more for the publicity that being a good writer.
Now, like some people said, we don't know shit about punk/phil, maybe his years of training at the gracies really made him an good fighter, or his fandom for comics makes him a good fit to write a comic, so in that case, the best is to wait and see™ and see how phil brooks does in his future endeavors

I don't have an issue with him getting to do dream stuff, clearly that's cool for the guy; but like with the Marvel thing it's pretty obviously a cash/notoriety thing on their part. It's a smart thing to do, and I don't begrudge em that, but I think that's where a lot of people's vitriol comes in, because the fame part is so clearly the driving factor in the WHY a guy/girl gets to do other things they might not get to otherwise.

I was just about to post that; yeah looks like the commissions think maybe this thing about him never having fought ever might be a lil iffy themselves.

The ironic thing about all of this is the 100% fact that Jack Swagger would legitimately be far FAR better at this than Punk will.
