*scoffing nerd noise* I don't watch Dr. Who. I watch Doctor Who *scoffing nerd noise*
Kidding. Got into it last Christmas. Really liked The Ninth Doctor, most of Ten, almost none of Eleven, and loved Twelve. Enjoy the ride!

So what is Torchwood and where does it fit in the timeline?

No, when it got all 'changed' it got rubbish. First couple of series were great. Then they had 'other' studio execs to appease.

I only watched the first season and it was like what a thirteen year old boy would write if they were asked to write and 'adult' show. I mean seriously a sex powered alien?

I think Torchwood is definitely worth watching, but I absolutely love Jack Harkness. Children of Earth is particularly intense. I haven't seen Miracle Day yet.
I think the order for Doctor Who and Torchwood is as follows, pulled from a quick google search. There is also a spinoff The Sarah Jane Adventures, which I have never seen nor heard anything about. I think it is a children's series.
Season 1 of Doctor Who Season 2 of Doctor Who Season 3 of Doctor Who, stopping after Blink Season 1 of Torchwood Season 3 of Doctor Who, restarting at Utopia Season 2 of Torchwood Season 4 of Doctor Who Season 3 of Torchwood (Children of Earth) Doctor Who Specials (four hour long episodes in 2009) Seasons 5 and 6 of Doctor Who Season 4 of Torchwood

Saw a few minutes of one, and it didn't seem too kiddy, they had monsters that looked like Richard E Grant's minions, a decent scary look for a kids who. Plus it has a couple of old companions and the Doctor actually drops in once or twice, unlike Torchwood.
