We've done numerous threads about how good looking or how ugly certain title belts are. So what is everyone's thoughts on this? I've got mixed feelings on it, myself. Aesthetically, I feel that it actually looks more like a midcard belt rather than a top prize-but this is probably a result of having grown upsurge the winged eagle in WWF and big goldie in WCW. In particular, I'm used to the idea of the center plate being bigger all around than the side plates. But on the other hand, you can't help but be a little in awe of the legacy, even if this particular belt is no longer what it once was. And compared to other promotions, it is pretty nice in terms if having its own, unique sort of look. Thoughts ? Back in the day of smaller belts, this was nice. I mean, compared to the WWWF Title of Bruno had... Or the early AWA title (used untill the 80's from what I can find... The NWA one looks boss next to those. Didn't the AWA title eventually get replaced by the original design that would become the one we'd recognize from the late '80s, then the "inmate" title that Stan Hansen held? Then the "Hennig/Lawler" belt? Going back to Domed Globe, it was what it was. The legacy > the design. It also led to the creation of a GREAT book! (Can't wait to get the one on Big Gold too)

You know what belt is awesome? The WINGLESS Eagle Belt. Ha! It is a bit silly how anyone ever started saying the words "winged eagle." And now, for some reason, everyone does, in regard to that belt.

"Winged" Eagle refers to the bars on the side of the main plate.

"Winged" Eagle refers to the bars on the side of the main plate. I may be in whoosh territory, but I just thought it was because the image of the eagle had its wings spread and thus are noticeable in particular.

Would you all agree that its design makes it probably the most influential wrestling title belt of all time?

I hate how the USA flag is on he middle of the belt, while the others countries are at the side.
Is like, this is supposed to be a WORLD champion yet the USA is at the center?. And yes, I know that 95% of the times the belt was defended at the united states and held by people from there, but still, in that regard the chikara belt looks better

Never cared for it; always looked too 'busy'.

Great legacy, horrible design. Also, I find it kind of odd that the center plate has a picture of a title belt on a title belt.

Maybe it is because I didn't start watching NWA until 1988, but this always feels like the NWA Title to me, even more so than that classic one.

It also led to the creation of a GREAT book! As a side note, I have that book, and managed to get it signed by Flair, Race, Rhodes, and Tommy Rich.

I love that belt. Standing a few feet away from it when Adam Pearce came to Melbourne to "defend it" a few years back was a highlight of my fandom. I also like the version before that one that Race had.

I also like the version before that one that Race had. I hadn't actually seen that before. I think that's the one Bobby Heenan mentioned being a fan of during one of his shoots with Jim Cornette.

I like that one, though the main plate feels slightly not wide enough. I guess I generally prefer belts wider than they are tall.

I remember seeing that one before too, though it's one of those things I always forget was a thing till I see it again. I'm a fan, it's got that classic feel to it too without looking too dated, a nice timeless feel.

Easily my least-favourite active belt, and one of my least-favourite belt designs of all time. For all the shit WWE get for the Spinner, the Divas title, the current WWE title, and the tag pennies, they've never made anything that looks as cheap and low rent as the NWA title.

The NWA title has the excuse of being a throwback to a bygone age of wrestling, all of it's value comes from being an old timey belt with a long legacy, all the WWE titles were designed in the modern era so there's no excuse for how tacky they are.

I will say this: say what you will about this belt or some modern ones, they look a lot better than many boxing titles. "We have a faceplate, what should we make the strap out of?" "Get my fourth of July decorations out of my garage, some tin platters for butter, my daughter's tutu she doesn't use anymore, and some hot glue." www.masisboxingbelts.com/images/WBA/wbasuper.jpg"Perfect! You're a genius, Stanley!"

Harley Race was the first guy to be awarded this particular belt, according to Tim Hornbaker in the NWA book.
Harley "handed over the old, tattered strap that dates back to Pat O'Connor" for the new title. And lost it to Jack Brisco. This is why I've heard it referred to as "the Brisco strap".
I, too, liked the flags. Jazzed it up and added a little bit of color. Look at the other World title belts of the time; they were so blah. I always guessed the flag on the front was the residing country of the champion, hence why it always seemed to have USA on the main plate. (Shohei Baba was the only non-American to actually hold that particular belt, but I don't think he held it long enough to switch it up.)
That was the belt Slick Ric would come out on TV with, in the crook of his arm, covered by a $1,500 suit, boasting about being The Man "The World. Heavyweight. Wrestling. Champion." (Ric would always emphasize "wrestling". I liked that.)

The way I see it is the belts on both sides of the argument are very much of their times.

"Hey we just finished the belt! Do you like how we have all the countries represented on the side plates?" "That's awesome, but where is the USA?" "Uhhhhhhhh.....BRB"
