This scene is so much sadder watching it as an adult.
And damn does Tammy Grimes knock it out of the park.

How did they get the tree scene past on a kids' show?
There's a lot of interesting stuff out there as far as early '80s, non-Disney animated features go. This, Rock & Rule, and the animated sequences in The Wall come to mind.

I watched this for the first time last year. I almost didn't make it through, it was so boring.

Great film, but will say it didn't reach its potential. Written by Peter S. Beagle, produced by Rankin & Bass and made by the guys who went on to become Studio Ghibli, terrific voice cast. Given the time period, could have been part of that big wave of dark fantasy family films (and really, it was, just animated) but something just seems to be missing from it.

Understandable, though I think that the imperfect voice cast, at least in the case of the song I referenced earlier, did lead to that song being more believable to me. She sounded quite a bit more upset than I think she would have if she was just knocking it out of the park and sounding flawless. Otherwise, yeah, it could have benefited from a more solid voice cast.

Watched this film afew years back on Netflix..don't remember much about it, I remember a scary Skeleton though and a weird thing singing "See you later alligator"
However as far as Kids films that make you think "How the hell did this pass for a kids film"
That title belongs to Watership Down
My god!

Ninja Sex Party just released a cover of the theme to this movie. Due to it being one of Danny's favorite story and movie.
Also to hype the City Tour that Peter S. Beagle is doing.
