I can't stand Colbert and don't see him lasting too long on Late Night. He can't be his character over there and he can't do the political humor all the time either. I've seen him not being that character and trying to be funny doing other stuff (like Who's Line) and he's not very good and not very funny. I figure he'll probably have a short run, then go back to doing Colbert Report after a few years. Well, I have never found Letterman funny, so he is perfect for the role!

Time for this emotionless igneous news rock to close this chapter on his career.

The only thing missing from that finale was some Papa Bear, Bill O'Reilly.

The only thing missing from that finale was some Papa Bear, Bill O'Reilly. Likely because his arch-nemesis Keith Olbermann was there. Colbert probably didn't want to risk an on-air dust-up between them on his last night.

Loved the Colbert finale. I like that they made it seem like it was all one big report for The Daily Show at the end. And as stated before, that musical number was tremendous.

I hope Colbert succeeds as well, but Conan had a very rabid fan base as well.... Conan did, but Colbert basically has a cult. Conan also had a SUPER panicky network over his shoulder and a guy who wanted his old job back breathing down his neck. Colbert has neither.
He may fail as stated above but what's he really doing here? Colbert is making a smooth transition in straight late night talk show host. He'll do a monologue, bits and sketches then interview guests. He's been doing that for ten years. It'll just be the real Stephan Colbert...the guy who co-created Strangers with Candy. I am on board with that.
I think he gets at least 5 years. Late night is not a ratings monster. If 1/4 of the people who watch Letterman and 1/2 the people who watch The Report tune in he'll last much longer.
CRAIG FERGUSON NOTE: I read in the New York Post back when Letterman announced his retirement that Ferguson had a clause in his contract. It stated that if he was not offered The Late Show hosting duties 1st, CBS had to pay him 7-9 million dollars as a penalty. I truly hope he collected that. He was a unique talent in a unique time.

AFAIK, he didn't collect. His replacement, James Corden, has already appeared on the show with Craig's complete endorsement.

OH NO!! My bad...it was not picking his replacement....it was when Letterman steps down Ferguson gets first offer on The Late Show. IF CBS passed him over he got the penalty money. That was it.

I'm going to miss Craig Ferguson so f***ing much.
There is nothing I love more in entertainment than someone who takes American pop culture "institutions" and totally takes that box, rips apart the cardboard and throws it out the fake window.
Craig's show, for me, was absolutely flawless every single night. The repeated jokes, the completely lack of concern for the typical late night talk show shenanigans, and Craig and Josh Robert Thompson just being on every night, even when they weren't. Even when they half-ass, they're still better than everyone else.
And Jay Leno as his final guest is going to be a wonderful shitshow, and I can't wait.

I'm dreading tomorrow for Late Late Show. I don't want to say goodbye. But Craig letting Josh have some TV time tonight made me smile, gonna miss Geoff and all of them so damn much!

I'm so glad America is taking James Corden off Britain's hands.
Hopefully one day, they'll take Simon Cowell again too.
As for Colbert, I've never been a fan of the character, because its largely redundant. He's parodying right wing TV pundits, but they are so extreme, they are effectively self-parodies. To mock them, you'd need to be more extreme than they are, which Colbert's character isn't. A better example would be Joad Cressbeckler on The Onion News Network, which takes the angry right wing commentator persona to hilariously extreme levels.

Bah, the only late night talk show host I find funny is Conan, and really I just watch his bits on Youtube (I'm a subscriber to his page). Most of the time, when I try to catch any of the Late Night talk show hosts, I've missed all the funny bits and skits and they are talking to some boring guest or having some horrid crappy band playing miserable music. I always manage to miss the good guests and bands/singers. That's why I just stick to Conan on Youtube.

The reason Colbert worked as well as he did was that he actually fooled a ton of people into believing he was serious, and he was doing it constantly. The fact that he got so huge that he was able to head the Correspondent's Dinner and was even a borderline Presidential Candidate showed how good he truly was.
