What I mean is a wrestler who was given an almost similar gimmick to a leaving popular wrestler in the same company. An example would be USA Lex Luger essentially being given Hulk Hogan's gimmick when Hogan was leaving the WWF.

USA Lex and Hulk Hogan were two totally different characters/gimmicks. Lex was just slated to take over Hogan's top babyface roll not be a Hogan clone.

Kelly Kelly as replacement Trish Stratus. Just no. In every way imaginable, no

Not sure if it counts, but Stan Lane replacing Dennis Condrey in the Midnight Express. Or Del Ray replacing Lane in the Heavenly Bodies.

I'm not just trying to be respectful of the recently departed, but I actually preferred the Gigolo to Sweet Stan. Something about Stan Lane has always irked me. I wish the timing had been right for an Beautiful Bobby/Gigolo Jimmy version of the Bodies.

Heidenreich and Crush as replacements for Hawk in the Legion of Doom. Yuck.

USA Lex and Hulk Hogan were two totally different characters/gimmicks. Lex was just slated to take over Hogan's top babyface roll not be a Hogan clone. I don't think OP is asking people to name clones, but replacement wrestlers. Lex was envisioned by McMahon as being the next Hogan-type American Made babyface, not necessarily a clone. Therefore, the example is legitimate. However, I tend to believe that the problem was not Lex, but the entire idea that someone could be brought in and draped in the red/white/blue and expect to have fans embrace him like they did Hogan. Very out of touch. Surprised to hear the dislike for Stan Lane in this thread. Del Ray was better with Prichard, but I thought Stan was a great replacement for Condrey. Nothing against Condrey, but the team needed to be updated in the late 80's when hairy guys with pot bellies were no longer the best product to present to a national audience. Stan gave the Midnights a much needed facelift. My submission to this discussion is: Dick Slater substituted for Terry Funk to tag with Muta against Flair and Sting at Clash VIII. That was a disappointing evening.

Corporal Kirchner for Sgt Slaughter would have to be on the list of the worst right?

Shawn Michaels replacing Jerry Lawler to go against the Hart's is all fine and Dandy. But leading a parade of midget knights was odd for Michaels.

Terry Taylor was slated to be the original Mr. Perfect before Curt Hennig was given the gimmick.
I think Taylor deserved much more than being burdened with the Red Rooster for the rest of his career but Hennig was a world class wrestler and did better than Taylor would have with the gimmick.

I've heard a lot of conflicting reports about the Terry Taylor/Mr. Perfect thing, but Terry Taylor did have a decent run in WCW where I felt he was well used as Terrence Taylor and got out from under the Red Rooster image.

Sivi Afi was awful. He even teamed with the same wrestlers Jimmy Snuka usually would: Tonga Kid and Ricky Steamboat. Only positive I remember about the guy was his fire-twirling debut. That was neat. (Oh, and Iron Mike Sharpe stepping on his bare feet during matches.)
Corporal Kirchner replaced Sgt. Slaughter (just too convenient both were Marines) and feuded with the same men: Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff. (Then you'd flip to the AWA and there's Slaughter training Greg "Rambo" Gagne in a camoflage tank tops and cargo pants. Yes, they actually did nickname Greg "Rambo" for a time...and they were damn serious saying it with a straight face, too.)
One of the Cousins Hillbilly Jim had: Luke for Junior (or was it vice versa)? That was a good replacement. Must have been if I didn't know the difference.
Moondog King (Montreal's own "Sailor" Ed White) replaced with Spot (Larry Latham). That is a good replacement, also.
