No stupid pretty boy villains for the girl FF fans to fall in love with and shove down your throat non-stop. That alone makes I the worst game in the series. I think I enjoyed V, VII, VIII, IX, X, X-2 and Dissidia the most. XII would have been perfect if the story wasn't so exposition-heavy and we had got to know the quirks of the characters better. Final Fantasy I quirks...make up your own. The characters are nice blank slates, you can have them do anything. Maybe your Red Mage is addicted to pretzels, or your fighter only likes to use swords...whatever you want! You don't have an idiot running around with a bird in his hair for absolutely no reason! If the FFs you mentioned were more like Dragon Age or something, where you could kinda choose your path and have your character act as you want, I'd be more prone to agree with you, but instead the characters personalities are cemented in stone. If I don't want to put up with Snow's stupidity, I would like the option to not have him say really stupid shit. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

if you don't want a thief (and it's recommended that you don't take one) Blasphemy the thief is the best character.

Yeah I never cared for the "blank slate" character in video games. I generally like Square's stories about their mentally screwed up bishonen, even though I wouldn't mind seeing them deviate from that more often I've always seen it as their own little thing.

Out of the Final Fantasy games I have played I would say
5, 7 and 10 are the best easily.
10-2 is fun.
2,3, and 4 I am on the fence because I havent really played them. I might buy 4 soon.
8 and 9 are fun in parts.
6 and 12 are rubbish.

Hm, I've actually been seeing quite a lot of VI hate, lately.

I love Final Fantasy 8. The junction system is really fun to use. I've heard people criticize it, but I found it was easy to use once you got used to it. I'm playing Earthbound now and once I beat that, I'm thinking of trying to play Skyward Sword or a Final Fantasy game I haven't played before (though I haven't beat Final Fantasy 1 so I might try and do that).
Of course, besides 7, that's the best game ever. But, I'll throw 4 out there, which I have as 2 for my SNES.

The original, because it started my love for RPGs when I was a wee lad.
IV blew my mind, since it was the first next generation RPG I played, as well as the first with characters who had personality.
VI is the one I've played the most. I was completely lost in the whole experience that game offered.
And VIII is my favorite. I don't even know why. It just makes me happy to play it.

Tactics has the best story in the series, easily, but it has a pretty slow combat system and the "tactics" are pretty rudimentary.
X has the funnest battle system to me, and it's amazing to think how long it took them to do it, but the script and voice acting are awful.
6 has the best cast of characters, although it's not without it's faults.
Honestly, I'm the type of person who can find something to like in most of the games that make them worth at least a play.

VI and Tactics are the two best overall.
VIII is worth playing once to see if you like it. There are a lot of interesting things in the game, both in the plot and the gameplay, but for me the end result was a bit of a mess.
Final Fantasy X has great gameplay. If it weren't for the rest of the game it would be my favorite just on the gameplay alone. Unfortunately there's Tidus and company.
XIII is shit.
