I actively avoid seeing their movies. Therefore, I can't really judge.
I have seen Pearl Harbor and Armageddon. I didn't like either of them.
I have seen Unbreakable, Signs, and The Sixth Sense. I didn't care for Unbreakable or Signs, but I did like The Sixth Sense, though I figured out the twist before the big reveal.
Even though I haven't seen much of his work, I suspect that Michael Bay better serves a section of movie fans, those who like action and explosions. I don't think M. Night Shyamalan is really serving much of an audience at all nowadays. I don't know anyone who likes films like After Earth or The Last Airbender, while I do know some people who like Michael Bay movies. Again, I can't really judge since I actively avoid their movies.

At least Bay can make something entertaining.
M Night has one trick, and it's not twists. It's Slow and Quiet in Muted Tones. This worked well with mystery/horror like The 6th Sense, and to an extent in Unbreakable. But for movies that required a little more of a pulse like After Earth, Airbender, or The Happening, it just showed how limited he was as a filmmaker.

Wow, I'm shocked that Shyamalan won the poll by a huge margin. I was expecting it to be close, and for Bay to win as worse director. The thing is I give credit to Shyamalan for at least doing 3 good movies in a row, so I don't know what the deal is with him the past few years where all his movies are awful these days. I think the public might of forced him into doing movies that he wouldn't normally do since people started to get tired of his twist ending gimmick. But why change something that was working? The vast majority of people really enjoyed The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, & Signs. And The Village at least got mixed reviews & did very well in theaters. But after that his career has been done. With Bay, with the exception of The Rock & the first Bad Boys, the quality of his movies are complete shit. To me The Rock was just a fluke that it turned out so well, since he's never directed anything anywhere as good since then.

Personally Bay has made more movies that I actually enjoyed (Bad Boys I&II , Pain and Gain , and Transformers I) , and plus (and I know this is my fandom Blinding me) I can't forgive M. Night for the Sacrilege that was Avatar. Don't you mean After Earth? That suggests that After Earth was sacred before.

I feel like M. Night is a total hack, and he made The Last Airbender, which is simply embarrassing, and one of the worst adaptations I've ever seen. Michael Bay, I feel like he generally accomplishes what he wants to do. I just think he sets out to make films I don't tend to like very much.

Bay made The Rock. Nuff said. I think The Sixth Sense is the better overall movie though. I think in terms of fun entertainment value, The Rock has much more replay value. But in terms of actual quality of movie, The Sixth Sense is definitely better.

At least Bay movies look really cool on the big screen despite how pointless, over the top, or out of context the action is. I can't say that with Shyamalan so I think he's worse.

Both are terrible but at least Shyamalan tries different types of movies(even though he fails).
Plus Shyamalan didn't mock me and say I'm going to go see his movies anyway.

As bad as he has become, MNS has never made me want to puke more than Bay did with ROTF. At least MNS never gave us this bullshit: Makes Jar Jar Binks look like an NAACP Image Award winner

Nights.
I'd rather watch hacky popcorn than hacky plot twist.
They both stink though and have managed to nearly obliterate their successes with their failures.

First off, both are f***ing terrible. However, for the sake of this thread, I would pick Michael Bay. He deserves to be blackballed for that Ninja Turtles abomination he helped put into this world.

I love Bad Boys 2 and Pain and Gain unironically and, for bad or worse, Bay has legitimized a type of filmmaking so he can't actually be accused of hackery.
Shyamalan is a one trick pony who bought into his own hype.

At least with Micheal Bay movies you can turn off your brain and watch shit explode.

I don't really hate either of these men to be honest. One thing you can say about Shyamalan is he at least attempts originality with his films. I think what hurts him the most is that writing isn't his strong suit, he should have a strong and capable writer script his films, and have him just focus on directing.
Because as a director I think he's great and has interesting visuals, knows how to create tension, and suspense. Plus I love The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable(His best film in my opinion), and Signs. He needs to go back to making films like that honestly.
Bay, on the other hand, I have enjoyed Bad Boys 1 and 2, The Rock, Armageddon, Pain and Gain, and despite its flaws I do enjoy the Transformers franchise. But I just absolutely abhor what he did to the characters and how it's more of a human storyline rather than focusing on the alien robots.

I'll go ahead and say Bay. Anyone who says Unicron is too stupid to include in a film about alien robots turning into cars is just ridiculous.

I have a massive dislike for Bay. His work is a ton of propaganda, with overblown action sequences that drag, misogyny, and bits and pieces of racism littered all over it.
But here's the thing: he accomplishes what he sets out to do. To me, the worse artist is one who fails to meet their expressive goals in their work. Moreso than their financial goals.
And Shyamalan has struck out way more than Bay in that regard. Add in the disgraces known as The Happening, The Village and The Last Airbender, and you've got yourself a winner. Even if I hate the reasons why Bay does what he does.

They are nothing special but Bay's flicks are generally worth watching. I'll check them out when they come to video or cable.
Shamylan started with a couple quality flicks but really went to crap.
