I'd give the edge to Reigns. Both have a good look and good physical charisma, but Reigns is more athletic and has somewhat better mic skills (though that's neither guy's strong suit) than 04/05 Batista. Batista definitely had the better angle, though - his slow-burn feud with HHH was done pretty much perfectly. I doubt Reigns will get anything near as compelling. This is what makes Batista's rise far better than Reigns's. I would agree, Reigns is probably better than 2005 Batista, but just barely, and it's mainly because the story of Reigns's solo "rise", if you want to call it that, has been god awful. He was booked terribly, and although I don't think he'd be ready to main event WM regardless, he should have been booked much better. Ambrose and Rollins have been booked better, Rollins especially. Main eventing isn't just about ability, but also about booking. With so many rumors of WWE wanting to push Reigns to the main event, you'd think they'd book him well, but they haven't. If anything, they've made him worse. The dumb promos they make him cut, the horrible matches they put him in, I mean, he's not perfect by any means, but Jesus, it's some weird sick irony that WWE wants him at the top, but is making him shit. It's like they have no idea they're hurting him, but horrible damage has been done. I don't think any of The Shield members are ready to main event in a title match at WM yet, but Ambrose and Rollins are much closer than Reigns, all because of booking.

I'd say Reigns is more proven than Batista was back then. But Batista was A LOT more over than Reigns is now. He was like Daniel Bryan circa '13/'14 levels of over back then. Remember he wasn't their original choice to face Trips at Zmania. He just got so popular they would have been stupid not to go with him. Reigns isn't in the same situation, which is why I believe holding off for another year won't hurt him.

I was really interested to see this poll result, because I wasn't watching during the time Batista became a star. so, Batty was better than Roman now, according to many.
One huge difference I see is that Batista had a strong angle and the perfect heel to work with in Triple H, a guy that can carry him to a great match and can help make him better, while putting him over like a million bucks. Where as Reigns, there's no heel outside of Brock who is enough of a threat to make me think it's an accomplishment for Roman to beat him, and right now there's zero issue between Reigns and Lesnar. And Lesnar isn't really a guy who carries people to great matches, or is great at building a feud and putting someone over. It's just not his game. Reigns needs that guy, and it could be Seth Rollins, but they're not booking him strong enough right now and he doesn't have near the credibility of 2005 Triple H.

Reigns is about six years younger than Batista was when Batista was being groomed for that main event spot. Reigns comes from a football background and was actually good enough to play prominently for a pretty big school. Both of them had good looks, but I would argue that Reigns has a better overall look than Batista. So from a cosmetic and age standpoint, I'd say Reigns has more potential now than Batista did.
However, we won't know if Roman Reigns's push to the top (if it happens) will work as well as Batista's. Don't fool yourself if you think Batista didn't work out as a top champion. His feud with Triple H to become champion was great. I've heard many former creative members tout how successful Dave was in drawing crowds in Europe and Asia. Also, Batista has been credited (along with Eddie and Rey) with SmackDown building a large Latino audience. Batista himself is not Hispanic, but WWE internal information showed that he appealed to these fans, perhaps because the name 'Bautista' is a Spanish surname and fairly common within the Spanish-speaking people.
