This is a bit too smart for WWE, but here goes....
The Miz/Mizdow breakup is played through Mania, where they'll lose the tag belts (doesn't really matter who), Miz blames Mizdow, the two square off and Mizdow defeats Miz.
Next night on Raw, Miz is infuriated and fires Mizdow. We don't see Sandow for a couple of weeks, but when he returned he strolls down to the ring to mimic another heel. Said heel confronts Sandow backstage and demands an explanation. Sandow calmly replies "anything you can do, I can do better....."
And Sandow's next handful of matches/feuds would be him beating other wrestlers with their own moves. Worth a B-belt if you ask me.

Why does it need to end anytime soon?
Mizdow will just end up like another Alex Riley if he were to break up with Miz now.

I think people underestimate Damien Sandow in the scope of all things WWE.
I believe he's high on Triple H's pecking order, sort of in the same way that Cesaro is but Triple H can't protect him from being booked into oblivion cause Vince is still in the driver's seat.
Simply put, Sandow will thrive once the reigns are handed over to Triple H. I easily see Sandow in the position that Ziggler is in within the next few years.

The natural cut off point is Mizdow not eliminating himself at the Rumble. Any other point is a waste. How you keep him a face after it though, I am not sure. A continuity way of doing it is have him slightly revert back to his Intellectual Saviour thing by saying he was playing Miz all along and Miz was his stunt double as he did all the work while Sandow got love. How you manage to keep that up as a face though outside of working with Miz, I am not sure. Alex Riley had the same problem. Saying that he was playing Miz doesn't sound very face-ish. Sandow really wouldn't be rootable outside of "lol Sandow's a face because Miz sucks and we hate him". I honestly don't think Sandow should turn face. I personally think the cutoff should be Miz getting crushed by a monster heel and Sandow being too fixated on imitating Miz to actually help him. Then you can evolve Sandow into having w breakdown and thinking he's Miz before making him a general "unhinged" character (I know we have enough of those already, but still). Bit of a risk for the crowd popping for that.

I had a dream about this. Didn't go too far into the payoff, but... The segment happens after Miz and Damien lose the tag titles. The next night on Raw, Miz is berating Mizdow, saying it's all his fault, whne suddenly, Damien interrupts with one loud "SILENCE!" He seems apologetic, Miz continues, slaps Mizdow, the retalation where Damien leaves Miz laying....he grabs the mic... "YOU'RE WELCOME!" And the Hallelujah chorus plays as he leaves. This....or Mizdow becomes a bigger star and Miz becomes a has been. Mizdow gets his own stunt double in Alex Riley and Miz becomes a wandering bearded hobo looking for work.

It's not good, but:
The biggest way I could see them getting something out of a corner when Mizdow turns is:
Miz keeps trying to get Naomi to turn on the Usos to go to Hollywood, but it never manages to work.
At the Rumble, Mizdow doesn't eliminate himself, Miz is pissed. Between February and Wrestlemania, Mizdow makes the turn on Miz, the Road to Wrestlemania is built on Sandow gunning for his freedom from Miz.
Mania 31- Sandow wins his freedom after Naomi helps him win- Sandow's free, Miz loses everything down to his Mania streak.
Once Sandow wins at Mania, Sandow decides even if he doesn't want to be Miz's stunt double, he does enjoy being a professional stuntman. He and Naomi start an APA-like business for the WWE roster (Sandow handling the Superstars, Naomi handling the Divas) where they rent themselves out for freelance stunt work- showing up and being stunt doubles for whoever pays them that week (so they can just show up, dress like a WWE superstar, and do the stunt double schtick.)
It sucks, but at least it's something to go from there.

I like the idea of Sandow using his intelligence to become a wrestling Taskmaster (not Kevin Sullivan, the Marvel one).

There is no payoff. It's a gimmick that requires him being with the Miz. Who is he going to copy if he's not tagging with the Miz?
Need to leave the team together this time. At least for a while.

And ironically, that would get a 'This is Awesome chant' that Miz used to beg for with his gimmick. I would love this idea, the intellectual savoir gimmick can be a great The Rock-esque cocky face gimmick if done the right way.

Have Mizdow win the rumble.
Have Mizdow win the title from Brock Lesnar.
Miz then thinks he's Mizdow/champion.
Best payoff I can think of.

Once the Miz impersonations stop then Sandow is in trouble because that IS his heat.

I mostly wonder how much longer the tag team division will remain hostage to a poor wrestler who we all seem to agree is in trouble when his current act is over.

Nothing. This is pretty much it for him. Once it's over, it's just a matter of time before he's released. They don't know what to do with Sandow. I know. The entire point of this thread is that I can't even think how a competent booker could continue this angle. It's painted itself into a corner. I was trying to see if anyone could think of a good way to progress it after he turns on Miz since people on here frequently have better ideas than WWE. Unless he appears in segments without Miz as well as the ones with him, to re-establish his own personality? Then he wouldn't go straight back to nothing after turning on Miz. There's no kayfabe reason he can't be Miz's stunt double plus a singles wrestler, is there?

I would have Miz start bringing in a second stunt double to slowly replace Mizdow. Miz treats Mizdow like he doesn't matter and stunt doubles are a dime a dozen. Only this new stunt double is clearly inferior to Mizdow while Mizdow slowly grows despondent over the situation. The crowd would also hate the new stunt double and sympathize with Mizdow. I dunno who could play the second stunt double. A guy like Curt Hawkins would be good for that role. I dunno how it would all end with one big "blowoff" but we would get quite a few good weeks of segments out of this. First we would have Miz toting around two stunt doubles, both imitating Miz at every turn while the two stunt doubles are quietly competing with eachother for the "role." We could also later see Mizdow unemployed and depressed in Anchorman-style comedy segments. While Miz and the new stunt double parade around as the tag champs, a delusional Mizdow could go around trying to stunt double for other superstars only to result in constant failure and humiliation. Eventually you'd get a couple matches out of this with Mizdow vs the new stunt double and Miz vs Mizdow. Maybe Mizdow even finds a new partner (The Rock) and gets retribution against Miz's team to claim the tag team titles. This new partner (Rock would be perfect) would convince Mizdow he's "more than just a stunt double" leading to Sandow to become a formidable singles competitor again.

Simple: Mizdow starts really believing he is The Miz. He takes his bookings. He shows up for appearances. He reads lines for auditions. Miz gets lost and marginalized as Mizdow becomes a bigger star. Mizdow shaves, dyes his hair, goes the whole nine yards. People should start referring to Mizdow AS The Miz, and vice versa. ("Of course it's TheMiz, Maggle, who else would it be?") This all would work better if Miz had a singles belt, but, basically Mizdow would essentially become The Miz. Miz cuts a promo about being himself, only to get told off by a Mizdow in full Stockholm Syndrome mode.
Face Mizdow enjoys foiling The Miz at every turn while The Miz tries to reclaim his life or title.
Heal Mizdow then reveals an intricate plot to corrupt the most vulnerable , shallow , weakest star to help him "grab the brass ring". This backfires since everyone hates The Miz and cheers a reborn Damien Sandow.

Miz eliminates Jimmy Uso with a running closeline.
Mizdow then eliminates Miz with the running closeline because he's mimicking what happened.
He turns to await elimination, but then suddenly ducks and eliminates some random midcarder (Titus O'Neill?) which upsets the already upset Miz even more. Miz rushes in and "assists" his stuntdouble.
~~~
The Miz yells at Mizdow the next night. They lose the titles. More yelling, building to an Alex Riley level nonsense that will get a pop because people love to see Miz get beat up.
~~~
Miz tries to distract Mizdow in a match. Mizdow still wins. Mizdow's opponent is ticked at this. (Mark Henry?)
~~~
Miz faces that opponent, but Mizdow appears, imitating the actions Miz took, but it actually works and the opponent wins.
~~~
Mizdow claims he is the better actor, performer, and entertainer. Angry Miz challenges him to a match.
~~~
An authority figure announces the green lighting of a new WWE Studios film. (The Chaperone 2?)
~~~
We get WWE Comedy level segments of wrestlers auditioning for the movie. Miz and Mizdow are top picks.
~~~
Miz vs. Mizdow at Wrestlemania. Winners stars in the film.
~~~
Mizdow gets to be in a movie.
After that? I don't know. Damien becomes the next Rock.

It should be something ridiculous.
Like, there should be a three way between the Undertaker, Cena and Miz or something and they goofy ECW book it and Sandow picks up the W via pantomiming Miz getting trashed and he inadvertently criticals one or possibly both his opponents by mimicking his running buddies' failure. He gets a small run.
He then starts to get cocky and more about himself, but he's still physically tied to the Miz by magic or whatever. Miz starts intentionally making him do the wrong thing out of jealousy. They feud.

Have Mizdow win the rumble. Have Mizdow win the title from Brock Lesnar. Miz then thinks he's Mizdow/champion. Best payoff I can think of. A few tweaks... After Rumble if Ryback fails the next non-Authority GM-of-the-week is Stone Cold. Miz hates Mizdow's popularity and demands he be named sole WWE Tag Team Champion officially since he does the hard work and Mizdow just stuntdoubles. Austin thinks it's fair, but before he can finish Rusev's music hits and Lana cuts a promo about fairness in America. Austin books a Triple Threat for the US Title Mizdow, Miz, Rusev, middle fingers Lana "how's that for fair Comrade? And that's the bottom-line..." If Miz or Sandow win Miz gets to be Tag Team Champ by himself, so it's better for him to help Mizdow win even if it's not him himself (you know where this is going). In the match, Miz breaks up several pins Mizdow has that could've pinned Rusev after a devestating 2-on-1 move. Miz and Mizdow somehow pin Rusev at the same time, protecting Rusev but stripping him of the title. Austin grants a Fast Lane match for Miz/Mizdow for the US Title on the next Smackdown. He also books a 'Mania match for the winner versus Rusev. Mizdow wins as Sandow to huge pops. He is billed as an underdog against "undefeated" Rusev at 'Mania. Sandow wins to huge pops.
