I have gift cards for places I like that are 5-10 minutes away from home at most. Sorry 'bout your situation.

I got 400 bucks worth of gift cards for christmas and bought 3 shirts, jeans, dress pants, a coat, dress shoes, tennis shoes, and a hat during the big after christmas sales. Had that been cash I would've just put it in the bank and got nothing for myself out of it just went towards typical expenses.

I'm cool with gift cards. If they tailor it to you specifically it shows real effort.

See I like gift cards because if I get cash, I almost always spend it on the kids. I got a Dunkin Donuts GC and a Best Buy GC this year, both will be more than likely spent on myself. Plus I've been given gift cards to a few restaurants in the past that I'd never been to, and theyre now some of my favorite places to go. I would have never gone there otherwise.

I got $360 in cash and put $300 in savings while I'm keeping the other $60 in my wallet as lunch money.

I always get $100 from my aunt for Christmas, and I always open it early so I can use the money for Christmas shopping.
I kinda hate Christmas. It's just an excuse for everyone to get more shit.

There are websites that will let you use your gift cards towards premium memberships to their sites.

I would rather have gift cards then try to explain what exactly I want.
For Christmas, I usually get gift cards to a couple of restaurants, grocery stores, Amazon, and Ticketmaster. so it's for stuff I need (groceries) and stuff I want (tickets, food).
I also get cash, in case there's someplace she can't get gift cards for (strangely, Micro Center doesn't sell gift cards online)

Also, that's why I fall back on the Amazon wishlist.
You can put what you want from Amazon AND from other sites in one list that you can send to people. Using that thing has gotten me more gifts that I've actually WANTED than any number of emails or whatever.

I got a ton of random gift cards from people on my route. A bunch of Starbucks ones, which I regifted, A Home Depot one, which I also regifted, an Applebee's one, and a few other random ones.
I also got so many Dunkin' Donuts GCs that I probably won't actually be paying for coffee until February.

There are websites that will let you use your gift cards towards premium memberships to their sites. Or websites where they buy your gifts or you can trade them or whatever. So he could take that Dominoe's one and get one to Hank's Bait and Tackle and Gas or whatever. I got $100 iTunes card, f*** yeah, now I have money to buy books or music or games or movies or whatever strikes my fancy. Gift cards rule.

I prefer getting gift cards these days because I am at the point in my life where I really can just buy stuff I want for myself. However, I remember getting a gift card to a movie theater that was only two towns over in a White Elephant gift exchange, and I ended using it.

Gift cards force me to buy something nice for myself (or someone else).
All my holiday cash went right into my bank account and will probably be used for random crap like bills.

But my family hasn't figured out how to order off the wishlist without me being sent an email saying what is ordered.

To me, it's like saying "here's kinda money that is only spendable at exactly one location that may or may not be convenient for you." They're fine if you're an established mark for whatever place it is or it's something practical like a gas card, but for whatever reason I was stricken with multiple cards this year that don't quite fit. For instance, we've a $20 Dominoes card. Taken alone, that's fine. Dominoes' is okay. We all like pizza. Thing is, the nearest one is like four towns away from here. Half of that value is negated by the amount of fuel needed to get there and back. Up next, we've a $25 Best Buy card. Not the strangest thing ever. I'm a game dork. I like electronics. Again though, there's not a location anywhere near here. I can use the thing online, but then I have to eat shipping costs and they're not even willing to ship all of the things they offer, so I'm really not free to choose as I see fit. Lastly, we've a $15 Subway card. Miraculously, we do actually have one of these around here. Thing is, I'm really not a big sub guy. I don't mean to come off as ungrateful, I super appreciate the fact anybody would be compelled to do anything at all for me, but it's just that it feels like these things were all snapped off the card rack at the last minute without any real thought and that kinda bugs me I guess. Somehow these cards have gotten over as this thing that is more intimate than a simple money gift, but they're not. They're just complicated money. Some people are just hard wired to think everything Christmas has to be some kind of gimmick. Who bought you those cards to places not in your area? I'm guessing they don't live in your area, and don't know that they're not around you. As for the Subway card, there's no rule against you using it on chips/soda/cookies. I did good on the gift card front this year. I got an iTunes card which I'll definitely use, and a Visa gift card. But now I have to figure out what to spend the Visa card on. I feel like Gizzark would, I might just use it on something practical like lunch for a few days. Buy another iTunes card. I did just that when a relative sent me a Visa card for my birthday. I'm a hard person to shop for, since there hasn't been anything in a very long time that has made me say "Oh man, I just GOTTA have that!" So I always tell my family to get me gift cards for iTunes or Amazon since I know I'll use them. A family friend got me a $25 iTunes card for Christmas and I promptly spent it. And now that I have an Apple TV, those gift cards will be even more useful if I start renting and buying movies in addition to downloading music.
