She probably was aware it'd turn heads, but according to her, it did on the set, too, since you could easily see down it and it was wildly impractical. I find it very odd George Lucas had such an about-face on it, considering that he had her breasts covered up and downplayed as much as possible in the first film.

Why did a fat-assed Hutt want a human chick in a bikini anyway? It was about asserting dominance over her. Seriously, could there have been a more humiliating fate for a princess than to wind up as a slave dancing girl for a crime lord? As far as Fisher goes, she has stated repeatedly that she had only two concerns when it came to the bikini: A) She worked out like crazy to eliminate every ounce of fat that she had in order to look as good as possible in it since there was no way to hide any flaws when it is worn. B) Since it did not mold to her body in the way cloth would, she was distinctly aware that when she laid next to the Jabba puppet that there were about 20-40 on set that could see her babymaking parts, or as she put it, "The guy playing Boba Fett could see all the way to Timbuktu." |

Conventions and cosplay were still very much in a dark corner of entertainment and fandom at the time. There was no internet, just movie magazines and official book/image releases. She may have had the notion it might possibly be another Raquel Welch/fur bikini-type poster phenomenon at best. They didn't even release that version of her as an action figure in the original line. |
