Yeah, still don't remember 1995 fondly. It was a steaming shit-pile for rock music.... granted, I was at the mercy of MTV.. but I remember really struggling for something new to listen to. I can really only think of White Zombie's "Astro Creep 2000" in rotation for me....

Gangsta's Paradise. God, that was a great song.
Also, When I Come Around. One of my favorites by Green Day.

Well that's just really depressing. That's exactly what that is.

It sure did. My point still stands. To be fair, Foo Fighters sit alongside Mastodon for me. Bands I KNOW are good, bands I SHOULD like, bands I really have no reason NOT to like.... they just never ever clicked for me. And yeah, I really wanted to like their self-titled album.... I tried really hard to get into what I heard, both from singles and from friends who had the CD..... I just couldn't get into it enough to justify buying it.

So I'm not one to paint their entire career with the same brush as others. But, to me.. the album was almost too raw. Like Dave didn't really know what he was supposed to do. A lot of the lyrics sounded like they were really trying to draw off the whole "I'll say random things and people will think it's deep" thing that was popular at the time, and a lot of people associated with Nirvana. I do think a lot of people expected Nirvana part 2, as people were aching for some part of Kurt Cobain to live on... there was a LOT of interest in Krist Novoselic's band as well, even though they never did anything on a national scope and also... at least, as far as I can tell. I really only remember seeing short clips on MTV News or something... You also have to realize, this was around the time Silverchair came out with "Frogstomp".... it was sold completely on the idea that Daniel Johns was a HUGE Nirvana fan and they were considered "The Nirvana Of Australia".... so you had people coming out in droves to buy their album and call them the heir to Nirvana's throne. That's really all you needed, once Kurt committed suicide... if you had the media associate you with Nirvana's legacy, you would hit big. A lot of bands fell to the wayside because they either tried too hard to do that, or they really weren't that similar to Nirvana. Silverchair went off in a completely different direction after "Frogstomp" and you can tell they were a lot more comfortable in their skin once the Nirvana comparisons faded. Even in the first part of the 2000s... bands like Seether, Puddle Of Mudd, and Cold rose to fame due to their Nirvana similarities... which usually only consisted of a passing vocal resemblance to Kurt in Seether and Puddle Of Mudd... and Cold saying they "wanted to bring back the grunge sound." I do remember something around that time where Dave felt uncomfortable as the focal point too, where his stage banter still needed a lot of work, he couldn't really captivate a crowd very well at the time. He obviously got leagues better with time, and I do feel that he has become a better frontman, lyricist, songwriter, and overall performer as the years go on. He's one of those guys where, you hear a new album is coming out and you don't even need to hear it to know it'll be good, if you're a fan.

See, I don't feel old, these are songs from when I was a kid, I love them, but I know I haven't been a kid for a while. Time feels like it's passing nicely right now.
I'm more likely to feel old with songs from about 5 years ago that still feel current to me.

I'm more likely to feel old with songs from about 5 years ago that still feel current to me. I'm in the same boat. 1995 feels like 20 years ago. 2000 feels like 15 years ago. But I find 2005 being 10 years ago, 2010 being 5 years ago and even 2013 being 2 years ago very unsettling. I think the only thing really weird about all the things from the 90s turning 20 this decade is how all the 30th anniversaries I remember from the 90s are now having their 50th anniversaries. So much iconic music, film, television and comics are now legitimately half a century old. In the 90s, we learned about World War II being fifty years old, and all these great things from the 60s coming 20 years later. Time is a merciless conveyer belt. I'm still glad it's not 2008 anymore though.
