Would 5 days notice be enough before leaving this job?

I'm looking for another job. I work in security and my current one sucks I've been there for 4 months and there is obviously no chance of moving up the guys there are two seperate camps and one has the supervisor in the camp who treats them different. The place is also very hot inside and nobody is allowed to take of their jacket or have a break and the hours are not any good either. I just feel like telling them when I've found something that I will be gone by the following week. It's just three days Thurs-Sat. If I tell them it would be on a Saturday and would give them 5 days. Would that be ok?

Yeah, always give 2 weeks notice. If your job is as horrible as you're describing, they're going to need plenty of time to work something out for when you're not there.

It depends on your contract. I've worked jobs where the notice period is a week, and others where the notice period adds a week for every year that you work for the company to a maximum of three months.

There is no contract. Some other dude who was there for a few months told the guy the same week he would be leaving to go away and may or may not come back. Another kind pussyfooted around gave the guy 2 weeks but never actually worked any of the days accept for the last day. I'm just not sure exactly how it would be for me since they have me "in charge" downstairs. That is one of the reasons I'm going because they want me "in charge" and I'm not getting paid any more than anyone else.

But if the job sucks so much ass why would you give them the benefit of two weeks notice if they haven't given you the benefit of being able to take your jacket off? Unless you want a reference f*** them. How much notice would they give you if they were letting you go?

Just leaving wouldn't look anywhere near as well when trying to get a new job as at least letting your current employer know that you're quitting. Trust me, I know it's tempting to stop going to a shitty job, but keeping a decent work history is worth it.

I think we always want a reference. I'm wondering though is it really a big deal to tell them within 5 days? I mean it's not a legal requirement. They easily can find someone else.

I'll join the two week chorus. It's just the right thing to do, even if you hate the job. Always treat the employer with respect so you can get that reference. And also, there is something to be said for you being ethical even when they are not.

Give them two weeks because it's a courteous thing to do. No need to burn bridges especially if things don't go well with your new job. But you should't give them two weeks if it won't work in your favour. I didn't give my previous employer notice because it was slow to a point where I only worked 10 hours a week. Those two weeks would be better spent working full-time.

Yeah, at the Post Office, out of about 15 new hires that have quit in the last 2 years, exactly ONE has given any notice at all.

If you already have a new job lined up, you do not have to give them any notice. Just make sure not to put it on your resume when you leave the new job. I worked at TGIF and it sucked, I found a new job (I did not put TGIF on my resume) and I just stopped showing up. I did not feel bad because if you are treated like crap at a job you should not have to give a shit if they are screwed. I was happy that I did it that way because they screwed me over many times (working 15 hour shifts with no breaks, being told I had to stay longer because someone else called in and being treated like shit from everyone.). 10 dollars an hour is not enough money to get treated the way that I have been there.

Yeah so my total is about 23 hours. It was more during xmas but less than that when the place opened in September. My supervisor isn't mature enough for the role he is in. He actually has 3 months security experience and I have 10 and can't move up because all his buddys are in line waiting.

The notice is a courtesy to your coworkers as much as anything, since it makes the others less likely to get f***ed over by rescheduling.

Two weeks. Unless your physical health is specifically threatened due to negligence on the part of your employer in a way that can be documented or your contract specifically states you can give a shorter notice, the right thing to do would be two weeks.
