I have a question to the OP. What is the nature of your friendship? Is it balanced. Is it more of you being a friend to her than she is to you? How were her past relationships? Would you two even be compatible outside of you just liking her? How is she with other females around you (her female friends/ mutual female friends you share)? How did you become acquaintances in the first place?
All that matters before you even consider asking her. Ideally you should be friends before you get into a relationship because you want to know if that person is considerate beyond being physical. But I know that's not how it normally works.

Been there and here what it means. She likes you and sees you as a friend but she doesn't like you on that higher level. All girls look for something in a guy that lights there spark. You can be the most loyal and trusting guy in the world but if the spark isn't there is not there.
I asked a girl out before. Hell it how are relationship started was going out on a date and while some are against dating a co worker, we tried it. She just didn't feel it but did like me and 3 1/2 years later we are best friends and did get to that point of not wanting to risk a good thing which I respected. So no it not the end of the friendship or relationship if the two of you both have an open mind and are adults about it. She saw it as me saying that I liked her and cared enough too want to go another level. Over time I just did what I can too be a great friend and in return she does the same. We gotten to the point of we do say I love you to each other and not be weird. So it can work out.

Not interested in you, and your friendship will slowly die because now she knows you wish to place parts of yourself in her person.

That means she's giving you the ok to buy a fedora, grow your beard out, and complain on Reddit about how you totally deserve her because of how nice you've been to her.

If she were in a romantic relationship with you, she'd probably end up liking you less than if you just remained platonic friends.
I've had female friends in the past who were cool female friends, but if we ever actually dated.....oh boy. I'd probably get sick of them in short order.
