Barclay in Next Generation was probably supposed to be a sympathetic character for the most part, and I get that the holodeck addiction touched on some important stuff, but it didn't make it NOT deeply creepy.

Admiral Nechayev in Star Trek TNG She's always framed as the unreasonable Starfleet bureaucrat who Picard takes a brave moral stand against, but really she isn't. Was she the one from the episode The Drumhead? Nah, that was Admiral Satie. She was a paranoid bitch. I felt sympathy for Barclay because I know that Riker's personal holodeck programmes would have been far creepier.

Paulie in the Rocky movies He mistreats his sister, is completely ungrateful, insults Apollo, is a freeloader, and cost Rocky all his money. Yet they allowed this sack of shit to move into their mansion. And the biggest crime of all: in Rocky Balboa we discover Adrian died of cancer and not Paulie. I'm convinced the entire Rocky saga is actually Rocky in purgatory and Paulie is his own personal tormentor.

Sasuke Uchiha on Naruto, to the point where it ruins the show. "so what if he tried to kill everyone in Konoha, he didn't succeed so that's still okay".

The two Marines in "A Few Good Men"
Both Tom Cruise and Demi Moore's characters praise them.
They still killed that poor guy. Only Kevin Pollack's character sees them for what they are.

Quint in JAWS He's far from the loveable eccentric that pop culture paints him as He's actually very dangerous in this film, and is little help to the efforts to kill JAWS. He actually hinders the mission considerably and puts Hooper and Brody at mortal risk. I agree. The whole smashing the radio and running the Orca's engines till they exploded soured me on him. In his defense, the whole hunt probably brought back some uber bad memories from the USS Indianapolis incident. Its almost like he is in a state of shock or some sort of flashback and the only thing going through his mind was "kill the shark".

In "General Hospital", former nutcase Franco is the one who revealed to Michael that Sonny (Michael's stepfather) killed AJ (Michael's real father) after Franco found out that Sonny and Carly (Franco's fiance, Sonny's ex-wife, Michael's mother) had been screwing around behind his back... also that Sonny and Ava (mother of Michael's wife Kiki, and Ava is in a relationship with Sonny's son/Michael's half-brother Logan) had sex on AJ's grave the night of the funeral and Ava's child is either Logan's or Sonny's... so at Franco and Carly's wedding Franco stepped up and said "I want nothing to do with any of you" and told Michael the whole mountain of truth... And Franco is supposed to be the bad guy here. Everyone else (well, except Michael) is covering up murder, scandal and infidelity and Franco's the bad guy. Michael's brother's name is Morgan, not Logan. They named him after Jason. Franco did plant a camera on Carly in the form of a gaudy ass necklace to spy on her. And I don't think they whitewashed Carly and Sonny and made them the good guys. Michael pretty much hates everyone now.

Drago should have killed him instead of Apollo.

Maverick in Top Gun
Iceman was right. He really wasn't the kind of guy you'd want in your flying squadron. I'd have more trust in Dead Meat from "Hot Shots"

My 2 favorite modern examples are Walter White on Breaking Bad and Don Draper on Mad Men. These guys do beyond unredeemable things and then the audience takes their side even when they are in the wrong. The Showrunners themselves are clearly showing them for the scumbags they are it's not like they are trying to make them anti hero's people just beyond reason treat them that way. Walter, at least, is supposed to be a morality lesson: No matter what your intentions are, going down a road like drug manufacture and trade will lead you to losing everything. He was never supposed to be a hero, Hank was. It's unfortunate that some people still see Walt as one.

This happened on Family Matters all the time with Urkel. Even though he was a clumsy, destructive, socially inept stalker, if any of the Winslows told him off, we were supposed to feel sorry for him.
Besides that, remember that episode where Waldo, in his infinite wisdom, made out with Eddie's girlfriend because he thought Eddie told him to? Eddie called him an idiot, naturally, and Waldo responded by walking off somberly while the audience was all "Awwwwwww..."
Eddie had to apologize to him in the end...what kind of justice is that?

Harvey, Jessica, and Mike against Louis on Suits.
Harvey, Jessica, and Mike are blatantly breaking the law, and if Mike's secret ever got out, the entire firm would come crashing down. We're supposed to sympathize with them when they butt heads with Louis. The show has told us that Louis is the hardest working lawyer at the firm, and until this season (which was a horrible decision by the writers) did everything by the book and letter of the law. I know we were supposed to hate Louis for what happened in the season finale, and sympathize with everyone else, but f*** that, I was cheering Louis.

Naruto is the Twilight of Japan; everybody either sides with or bitches about the characters. There's no middle ground. Does Kratos from God of War count as an unsympathetic character? In the first game, it made sense as he wanted to make right to a wrong and to get revenge on Ares, but the other games have him as this mindless killer who wants to destroy everything just because. How is he supposed to a protagonist, even in the nominal hero territory?

That Charlie Brown special where Lucy keeps pulling the ball away from him during an actual football game, and everyone blames Charlie Brown for missing the kicks even though it is clearly Lucy's fault. The worst part of that was LUCY of all people joins in on the blame game to Charlie Brown. You cost everybody the game, you dumb bitch! No wonder so many fans hate you. That was the real reason why Schultz wanted that special edited, because he hated the idea that the person responsible for the gag not only didn't get reprimanded, but also blamed the wrong person for the team's failure, and as much as he liked Charlie Brown as this hard luck guy who only got rocks on Halloween and no eggs from the Easter Beagle, he didn't want him to have a completely bleak outlook on life. I'm pretty certain this cemented a lot of people's opinions into why they don't like Lucy.

Controversial call, but one that comes to mind in light of this week...Teresa from RHONJ wasn't that bad, but gets buried by everyone.

Given how the rest of this season seems to be laid out, I think they're fine with people rooting for Louis now.

The Bride from Kill Bill. She was just as if not MORE viscous than the other Deadly Viper Assassination Squad members BUT we are supposed to have sympathy for her because she got knocked up by her lover, a sociopath, and decided "zomgz teh hell with this im out of here" ? BULLSHIP!!!!!! How many widows and orphans did SHE create in her career and now because suddenly she sees what its like to be the victim I am supposed to feel for her? SCREW THAT! Budd is the ONLY one of the group to even remotely express regret and remorse for his actions (ironically he is also the only one who defeats The Bride in combat) and even then I dont feel sympathy for him. The Bride deserved to die and die horribly. The only innocents in that film are BB and Vivica Fox's daughter.

Although to be fair, in "Rocky Balboa" it showed Paulie at the very beginning in deep regret on how he treated Adrian and how it shouldn't have been her that died.
